Steralisation question

hey guys, iv been browsing your site for ages getting help with 'projects'. I have recently moved out and i no longer have such easy access to the use of a stover and pressure cooker for steralisation. I am doing the pf tek and was wondering if i could substitute the foil for cling film and steralise in the microwave instead? it would just make my life a hell of a lot easier if this would work. Thanks for any advice i plan on doing a grow diary as well if anyone is interested, Jack

try that tek.
at least get a big pot and steam them.. if you cant get a hold of a pressure cooker.

No, but I just saw a special microwaveable tupperware box, really small - about enough to hold one or two cakes, that had a special vacuum-locking lid. It could be worth a shot. Don't expect 100%, but I bet you could get 3 out of 5 if you kept things clean.

Microwave sterilization is a figment of someones imagination.
Boiling the jars works better, microwaving pfcake's will just cause them to explode all over. I know this from experience.

Idk I saw a guy around the Shroomery somewhere who does nothing but microwave sterilization and it can work. Not saying it can work for everyone that is important to remember. As long as your doing BRF cakes you can steam the jars in a pot with a lid. Do it for about 90 min at a steady boil, don't put more than an inch of water into the pot.

I seen lots of people claim to have had success in the microwave but in reality it is not sterilizing anything, it just renders spores/endospores dormant for a few days, if they got their sub colonized it was by luck not because what they were doing works, do not bother with that bit of mis-information.

Couldn't you steam sterilize in a microwave? You might have to constatly add water if you have a small microwave though.

For making your caseing layer or substrate the microwave is fine. But BRF inside a jar would not even be worth trying, honestly it would be luck.
Myself, I use the microwave for patching material and caseing layers.
You have a better chance boiling jars (buy a plug in burner for 15$) than the microwave.

Microwaves don't sterilize anything, neither does boiling. It only works because PF cakes have a very low level of contams and you can often get away with killing these by shitty methods. LC's that are full of preservatives are another example.
Casing is often not sterilized at all. Microwaving just wastes electricity. There will be cold and hot spots all through whatever you're trying to sterilize, if you've ever used a microwave to cook food you should know that.

that is a problem, and so is moisture loss. those 2 problems can be overcome if you look at any of my old posts on microwaving. Many fail since they only microwave for very short times. I doubt the procedure in the link above works well.
