Bringing back the draft?
    #7874455 - 01/13/08 05:22 PM (16 years, 19 days ago)

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-393

Quote:

Legislation > 2007-2008 (110th Congress)
H.R. 393: Universal National Service Act of 2007

To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to make permanent the favorable treatment afforded combat pay under the earned income tax credit, and for other purposes.

I hope this dies in committee. Ages 18-42? Do they really need that much cannon fodder for this war?

That guy sponsors that bill every year as a protest against the war in Iraq.

No, his point, and its a very good one, is that the entire burden of this war is falling on the poor and lower-class who are more likely to take the money that the US Armed Forces are doling out.

He says if you are going to fight the war, you should institute the draft so that the burden of fighting is put onto everyone, the rich and privileged included. He says there is no way the government would be perpetrating this war if their sons were forced to fight.

The only reason he puts the bill up for a vote is that he knows there is NO WAY it will pass. Nobody will vote for this.

Its a protest vote.

So what about all those Iraqi's over there who are trying to piece together a country out of the rubble we left them.

Would you fight to give them the chance to reclaim their country, or should we just leave it trashed?

I'm just asking what you'd be willing to fight for.

Well always be running to their aid if they never stand up and and learn to do stuff their selves. If we got bombed no one but us would rebuild anything.
Because we learned how to take care of ourselves.
In the revolutionary war we got help but we didn't stand there and expect anyone to fight our cival war for us.

Give a man a fish and he rats for a day.
Teach him to fish and you feed him for life

We're the most prosperous nation in the history of the Earth.

It's not like there isn't enough to go around.

50% of their population lives on a dollar a day.

I don't care how much debt we have.

Let me know when they can feed all of their people.

And if you want to believe we are the second most prosperous nation, that doesn't change my argument one wit.

You're implying that we feed all of our people, which is in fact not the case. People are starving and suffering from malnutrition in America too.
