unedible trametes versicolor
    #7873080 - 01/13/08 11:52 AM (16 years, 19 days ago)

Well, I was flipping through "Texas Mushrooms: A field guide" by Susan and VAn Metzler published in 1992 when I came across the trametes versicolor, and the book has them listed as inedible. Now my actual curiosity is, I was wondering if this was a misprint, or if that was understood to be the case in '92. Anyone? Thanks,

KnotaClu

It's not a misprint, Turkey tails are very tough, leather like polypores.
T. versicolor would be very hard to chew into something worth swallowing.
However, the dried fruit bodies make a good tasting mushroom tea and I
suppose you could grind them and add them to food for flavor.

That really clears things up, I was just taking inedible as meaning sickly, instead of taking it as meaning just unpleasant to "eat". Thanks for easing my mind.

They taste like cardboard with a hint of mushroom to it. Not very pleasing at all. Fine to eat, but not recommended. As mentioned, teas are the way to go with this and some of the other shelf fungi that are edible, but taste terrible. That way you can get the benefits of these mushrooms without gagging in the process. Although, I can't imagine teas tasting great either. I'd make a tea and would add that broth to something else. I think Roger mentioned using Reshi broths for the cooking of vegetables with.

I think guides just consider the culinary value and not the medicinal properties of the mushrooms and they rate them that way. So Trametes versicolor as well as Ganoderma lucidum and others are considered unedible but it would be better to say they are mushrooms "without culinary interest".

They taste like cardboard with a hint of mushroom to it.

Pretty good description, I like that taste. Oak maze polypore is another tasty polypore tea.
