The Complexification of the Universe
    #7872907 - 01/13/08 10:55 AM (16 years, 19 days ago)

The universe appears to have a direction, from the very beginning it has been evolving from simple structures (electrons, atoms...) to more complex ones (molecules, living beings...). This seems to be the the road down which the universe has been concentrating its force from the start.

Just think about it, here we are on Earth, a rather stable environment where it is possible for that force to continue its movements towards more complex organizations of molecules, where it is allowed for molecules to form without being degraded or dissociated by high temperatures. From procaryotes to eucaryotes, from single-celled bacteria to multicellular beings, complexification is the path.

At one point though, the number of atoms arranged into the molecules that form the cells of beings loses its important: its not because dinosaurs were constituted of more material than dogs that they were more complex. The complexicating force derived its energy in a new domain. The brain.

If you look at it this way, humans are undoubtly at the cutting edge of the universe's evolution, judging by the undescribable complexity of our brains. We are the products of the billions of years of the universe's workings. This is where complexity takes a complex turn. Because our brains are getting organized between each other! We've seen civilisation arise, societies unite, webs of economics and politics form, and all of these ties are only getting stronger, a phenomenon greatly accelerated by the internet. We are witnissing a "planetisation".

Indeed, humanity is getting tighter and tighter, and there exists a point in the future, in the continuation of the axe of complexity of the universe, where everything will converge. It is difficult to say in what form will take this hyperconcentration of humanity on itself, it is difficult to hypothesize what the supreme sythesis of the universe will look like.

But know this: the great organized effort that the driving force of the universe is making us act out will come to a success. We will attain, whatever the costs, total integrity. Because if we didn't, it would be the universe itself that, through Man, would fail to total up. And nothing can make the universe fail, not even our free will, which can fail in the details, but would not let us wander statically. This is a message of hope. We will attain our human synthesis: Peace.

Have faith in Man.

So far as we know, the human brain is the most complex thing in existence.

Its interesting how the network of neurons in the brain resembles several things. Mycelium for one? The patterns of stars and galaxies? and the patterns humans make on the earth. Or especially, patterns of the internet.

This is something that seems to be the case but is not accounted for by darwinian evolution. There are other theories of evolution, such as the development of the noosphere by Teilhard de Chardin that take this into account.

2012 anybody?

"As Teilhard envisaged it, the Law of Complexity/Consciousness continues to rise through the socialization of mankind. Mankind is converging upon itself on the earth, creating more complex forms of communication and information exchange, all attributing to a rise in the collective consciousness of the human race. Teilhard envisages a critical point of 'reflection', in which the collective consciousness of mankind (like that of the individual human-being) will become conscious of itself, attaining its term at Omega Point, that divine center of consciousness which was always drawing the universe to itself."

it seems like everything from the smallest singled celled organisms to the universe itself, everything is reaching out and spreading... like the neuro-net of the brain, cells want to spread and survive. The oak tree stretches itself up to the sky for life giving energy. The roots spread in the ground for nutrients. All life is succesful because of the connection they have with everything else.

awesome. i believe we'll eventually reach a point where we won't even need bodies anymore, that we'll exist as pure energy- able to manifest anything that the mind can imagine. Claude de Contrecoeur has a lot of interesting things to say.

I find this soooooo unlikely. Humanity, on the emotional level has seen no real progression in recorded history. (Look at Greece) It's true we can hide our disfunctionalism under piles of rhetoric (look at the American educational system, current religion and politics) better than ever and technology moves right along but that is pretty meaningless IMO.

I don't really agree that we haven't seen any evolution in the general emotional level of humanity, and I'm not saying that our emotions are different now than before. But why are you mixing in emotions with all of this? That's off-topic IMO.

Our degree of knowledge of the universe is very very acute, we've gone from being the center of 6,000 years old universe to realizing its unconceivable age and vastness. I'm talking about knowledge, about a cognitive consciousness of reality, and you have to admit that, in regards to that, we've never been so conscious! And all of this consciousness is reaching out for itself (sharing of knowledge for example) and creating huge networks. It is self-organizing into some kind of complex planetary netting, that is thickening and getting more and moree constricted.

Don't get all emotional about it

Actually, Theilhard De Chardin has the same idea, he thinks that at one point, humanity will reach a critical maturation point after fully totalising on itself, and it will "psychicly" detach from our planet. He says that from an exterior point of view, this phenomenon would seem similar to death, but that in reality it would be a simple metamorphosis. It wouldn't be an evasion from earth in a spacial sense, not an evasion towards the outside, but an evasion form within, a spiritual one. Something that would allow "a hyperconcentration of cosmic material unto itself".

Pretty cool huh?

What if I just want to drink some beers, bang my brother's ho, watch some sweaty men pretend to fight each other on TV and eat some corn dogs?

i.e. it seems to be going in both directions
