I'm getting excited for spring and summer and was wanting to get some hiking/camping trips set up for the family. but i don't know of any trails that you can hike and camp on. I was wondering if anyone from around western/central PA had any ideas of some descent places to go. they would have to be somewhat of a beginners level trails cuz my kids are still young but they surprised the hell out of me when we hiked mconals mills on what they could go threw. thanks for any info..

McConnell's Mills is really nice. I like walking along that trail that goes along the creek and checking out all of the big rocks and such. It's cool to chill up at Presque Isle in Erie on the beach too. I'd say your best bet is Cook's forest up near Clarion. There are cabins, campsites, and trails all over the place. It's nice up there.

Actually, right in my hometown there is a part of the rails to trails project. This particular trail goes about 18 miles from Saltsburg through Conemaugh Dam to Blairsville, which from there im sure its easy to hook onto trails that would take you near Pittsburgh.
Its not really hiking, but more or less a level path thats definately easy enough to walk or bike on for kids. Plus, if you wanted, there is a Kayak shop and a dock right in town (the river itself is usually pretty calm, but im not sure if the rental place has an age requirement).
