Rosetta Stoned is definitely the best song ever written about DMT.
rosetta stoned is about LSD, hence: blame hoffman.

hmmm.. i always assumed it was about acid, because the track before it that leads into rosetta stoned is called lost keys (blame hoffman). and albert hoffman of course synthesized LSD.

Definitions of pretentious on the Web:
* making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction; "a pretentious country house"; "a pretentious fraud ... * ostentatious: intended to attract notice and impress others; "an ostentatious sable coat" * ostentatious: of a display that is tawdry or vulgar
In what ways exactly are they pretentious?

TOO true. I mean there are sonogs that I like off of 10000 days, but the entire album as a whole does/did not impact me like Lateralus. Aenima, or Undertow have.
But yea I hate people who could tell you they like a new album before they even hear it lol.

The first line of Rosetta Stoned goes:
"Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,"

yep. i feel the same way about 10k days. some are hit and miss, others are great, but as an experience, it isn't the same as Aenima or Lateralus.
Undertow as well is a better "experience" album for me, though i prefer single song is sittings from 10k days more (Rosetta Stoned, Jambi, Right in Two...)

It's a wrench.... we are... your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve."
* ostentatious: intended to attract notice and impress others; "an ostentatious sable coat":
"Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and relatively long and complex releases..."
* ostentatious: of a display that is tawdry or vulgar:
See Wrenchdick
...Since you asked.
That being said, I don't mind listening to them on occasion, especially while influenced by substances. I would not ever buy an album though.

That's not pretentious. They were just explaining their intentions/desired purpose.

again, how is that pretentious? they have lots of visual arts and their releases are generally long AND complex. i am confused...
"* ostentatious: of a display that is tawdry or vulgar:

Okay, got me there. Maybe it can also just be viewed as non-conforming, or maybe they just like to have fun and push buttons on people.

ostentatious: intended to attract notice and impress others.
You mean their visual arts and relatively long and complex releases aren't intended to impress others? They're just doin' it for the lulz?
By your definition there, that would be pretentious. It could be argued that they're doing it for the art, but then again, I do art without plastering my logo all over shirts and merchandise.
"Tool is exactly what it sounds like: It's a big dick. It's a wrench.... we are... your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve."
Essentially saying that they are what you need to become enlightened. Sounds fairly pretentious to me... or using your definition, like they are "making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction..."
Dude, I'm not saying that they suck or anything, I just think that the band members and a good deal of their fans really are snobby about Tool.

i know you're not saying they suck, i would never argue with someone on musical subjectivity like that. i think you are just getting that image of pretentiousness from their fanbois, because the band itself doesn't put itself out there in this way.
