On another note, who here has read psychedelic experience period and what are your thoughts on it? I've always thought Leary was kinda crazy and I've never been a big fan, so I've shyed away from any of his books. I've always wanted to look into The Psychedelic Experience though, just never got around to it, and unfortunately they don't carry those kind of books at the library, at least in my neck of the woods.

what a flake! still his life must have been very satisfying to him in the long run- he made such a big splash in our culture. I wonder what the feds did to him privately though. after jail he seemed to dissappear into a meaningless cybernetic investment nightmare.
some free stuff is here: http://www.filestube.com/search.html?q=timothy%20leary&select=All&page=1

I think it's a really good book in terms of preparatory reading. However, the actual system in it with the huge number of stages that must be identified during a trip is just utter crap. No one needs to try and be applying stupid labels to what they're experiencing during a trip. That said, reading it before hand really can be a good thing.
I once read Leary's "Psychedelic Prayers", which is pretty much just the Tao Te Ching, during a trip. It was absolutely spot on, and really linked up with what I was experiencing. I think Leary did far more good than bad in his life, but he definitely made a few mistakes.

If you want to read something from a truly far out cat, read anything by Alan Watts.
Often you find in reading literature from other 'famous' psychonauts that they all slate Leary a bit.. I've not read any of his other works, but I can definitely see how the psychedelic experience could be of help. Reading it has definitely transformed my view of the entire experience. The only problem is, that you have to sift through Leary's narcissistic standpoint to get to the good information.. In general, despite his occasional lack of though, Leary was definitely a good guy

"Still the mind" and "The Joyous Cosmology" are the only things by Alan Watts I've read so far. Any recommendations other than these, Cepheus?

I read the instructions in the back before every trip to get me into a positive mindstate and so far so good...but i dont ever think of 3 bardos really although reentry is true, if you mediatate on the rentry of a trip you can really keep all the insights of the trip with you.
tried and tested.
i think its a great book but i still think i could write better trip instructions myself for the start, peak and come down "bardo's" obviously he's paved the way but you'd better off reading it once or twice then making your own trip mantras based on the philosophy of the book/your own philosophy.
Every trip i go into i try and make a list of my own/buddhist based quotes/mantras that i can reflect on during the trip, i usally forget but because the intention is there then they come back to me...as is the mechanics of the universe.
