adding straw to carlito bags
    #7869380 - 01/12/08 03:05 PM (16 years, 20 days ago)

Hey everybody, ive been reading up on here for months and am about to start a grow and decided to stop lurking finally:grin:.  So ive decided to go with the wronguy bags, but ive read that even some of the vets round here have had trouble innoc. bulk spawn bags with liquid cultures.. if i remember right i think Agar stated he only had a 60% success rate with them. Its seems to me that colonization speed might be a factor with the failure rate so i was wondering if adding straw would be able to help give the mycelium a faster growth time.. is this correct? and if so how much should i add/replace in wronguys tek or should i just leave it be.. i wouldnt want wronguy hunting me down haha.
I was thinking of this:
Yield: 4 large filter patch spawn bags

Ingredients:
48 Cups Shredded Horse Manure
10 Cups Vermiculite
8 Cups Coir
10 Cups Wild Bird Seed
14 Cups Shreaded Straw
4 Tablespoons Kelp Meal
6 Tablespoons Canola Oil
21 Cups Water

sounds like alot of substrate.... you should use colonized birdseed...cause if it takes too long then you might get a contam... the straw will make it more airy but i don't think it will help the cause

i do not have a flow hood so i believe innoculating with a liquid culture would be safer than a G2G transfer, especially since i am using sterilized manure, any other opinions??

you don't need a a flow hood....just sterile conditions. never had a flow hood and this is my prefered method....gloves.. rubbermaid on its side...lysol spray...h202dip the spoon after each jar. make sure to put all jars inside the tub and spray down with lysol before you begin... try to do it in a small place like a closet

are you sure you are familiar with the wronguy bag method?? They are spawnbags which include both horse manure and grain, and since they include grain you must sterilize, and when sterilizing manure it can be very succeptable to contams (since it kills all of the beneficial bacteria in the manure, which is why the method calls for a sealed spawn bag) so i dont believe its a very good idea at all to open the bag after sterilizing it. But thanks for the imput.
