i have an exam on my knee w/ an orthopedic MD on wednesday. i've had x-rays done on it at the E.R which show nothing, so im thinking they're going to do an MRI? and/or stick a syringe in my knee to draw fluid? (if there is any?)
anyway, what should i expect? =/

I've had two knee surgeries...nothing showed up on the x-ray when I first had it, but granted, it was a progressive condition. I developed osteochondritis dissecans, which was aggravated and progressed by misdiagnoses (thought I had Osgoods-Schlatters then thought tendonitis) and continuing to play soccer (the doctor that misdiagnosed me said it wouldn't cause further damage to keep playing...douche). I now have a large growing "osteochondral lesion" on the back of my kneecap. Basically, the back of my kneecap is dying, and has fractured several times, but the chip stayed in it's hole. Imagine a box of ice cream, take a scoop out, and then put the scoop back in; that's what my knee is like.
Anyway haha...we had an MRI done and examined by a competent doctor, no needles drawing fluid or any of that. The MRI should show anything that's wrong structurally in the tissue, if the x-ray didn't show anything. I doubt they would try to draw fluid without first doing an MRI, otherwise they wouldn't know for sure if there was fluid. What exactly did you do?
The two surgeries I had were both arthroscopic cleaning procedures, basically getting rid of all my torn cartilage and pushing the chip back into it's hole. The first surgery I had holes drilled in my knee to increase blood flow, so as to have the chip stick back in. Second surgery, I went back four months later when it hurt again...the dead/dying spot had grown 4x larger (explaining why the first procedure didn't work, because you can't stick dead bone to dead bone) and just had another cleaning procedure. Now I either have a cleaning thing every year or two, or major knee surgery (replacing the back of my kneecap with grafted bone) or a knee replacement. I'm only 18 so it looks like sucking it up for awhile.

i didnt do anything particular, but i had 2 jobs during the summer of 06' when the pain first started. there was one day in particular where the pain was the worst, assuming that was the day when whatever it was gave way, tore ripped, etc.
i thought it would go away..but now im goin to see the doc. almost 2 years later heh.

I have yet to have any kind of surgery like this. Thank the powers! I have never broken a bone in my life yet, either, and I skated all through high school as well as played soccer and baseball. Oh and 2 years of football. It baffles me. I have had some mean sprains, though.

my brother did...
every time he went in to get it checked out, they told him nothing was wrong. x rays, mris, nothing showed anything wrong. then one time he was in the doc was like alright man, ill cut you open and have a look around, and go from there. turned out he tore his medial meniscus? or some shit, i dunno... but for the longest time we all thought he was just being a pussy, cuz the docs couldnt find that shit for some reason.

You could have what I have. I never had a traumatic injury, doctors think it might've been a growth defect or something like that...I did grow 9" in one year, so maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, it progressively got more painful, up to the point where I couldn't walk upstairs because of my bone chip. I think it's a circulation problem, because my knee gets very cold after physical activity...that would explain why the bone is dying. My hip started to bother me as well, as I favored my knee. Get the MRI and have a radiologist look at it, my orthopedist was the one who misdiagnosed me before and after an MRI.
