    #7868252 - 01/12/08 07:36 AM (17 years, 8 days ago)

yea i got colored calcium sand.(crushed shells and bones for reptles.) it is 100% calcium carbonate. but theres also green coloring in it.
well if its safe for reptiles it should be safe for fungus?
anyone have experience with colored sand?
my casing and bulks are gonna be green! haha

it aint green haha. i mean, when its less than 5% of the total mix, considering verm peat and gypsum.

heres a good casind recipe.
10parts verm
10part peat
1part calci sand
1part plaster of paris.

Yes i know people dont recoment plaster of paris. but at that little volume there is no effect of it. its just the same as ive seen.

I just got the white untreated Calcium sand from Petco. It says it's completely untreated and pulverized for reptiles. I'm using it to keep fungus from killing my cactus seedlings. I hope it works for mushroom compost casings. They had other kinds treated different colors but I figure the untreated white sand would be better to add to casing substrate.

What role does calcium carbonate play in a casing?

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

It's used as a PH Buffer for Peat and verm casing. That with Crushed oyster shells I hear is good.

calcium sand or any coarse calcium carbonate adds nice texture in the layer which i found gives me better pinset.

Calcium Carbonate brings the ph to around 8.5 i believe and holds it there longer than lime. But isnt as quick acting as lime, whichll raise it immediatly.

so its best to use both lime and caclicarbonate together. for quick effects and long term effects(multiple flushes)

also, calcium carbonate is very safe compared to lime which can burn your eyes!

you cannot fuck up on calcium carbonate, it doesnt go up above 8.5 no matter how much you add. I like to add extra to keep things textured.

lime on the other hand... be careful with it.
