PHOTOS in zip file, some show borders, other show shrinking/cake color
SO i have lots of these jars(1/2 pint), I used boiled method to sterilize (1 hour-1.5 hour boil), used high proof booze to sterilize needle, and used dry Verm later with holes taped, then opened after a week. These jars are made with ground brown rice and verm and water(PF tek)
My temps have been colder than I would like but its seems on each jar, the cake shrinks and the outside turns tan and has a super thin myc covering thats tan, and it happened exactly the same to each jar ive tried, after about 2 weeks the myc just stops growing around 40-60% coverage, now from the pics it looks like contam as theres borders.
Hers the interesting part, I tested some and dunked then FC them and no mold grew (other than the good stuff)?
I injected one with hydrogen peroxide (3%) and nothing happened, no foaming? and the cake looked the same a day later.
1. so is this contam? or is it just the cake breaking down and the tan is caused by the rice?
2. to get jars back on track should I flip and lift off jar for a second? Im already planning on upping the temps soon.
ALSO ive seen triche and lipstick and myce piss and I think bacteria before, also the jars smell fine. However I am a new at this so please be kind. Ive looked through every single photo on contam and have seen nothing like this, and also watched the youtube videos.
Last question, http://www.kitchencollection.com/Temp_Products.cfm?sku=00142571 anyone find a PC cheaper than this?

if you can call those photos.. put your camera in close-up mode.. it's extremely difficult to see whats going on inside your jars.. they look fine though as far as i can tell.. just colonizing slowly.
how cold.. exactly?
i believe you've probably just gotten it too cold and it's stalling the mycelium..
put them in an incubator and they should resume.. and be patient.
and yes they have a same price 4 quart at walmart and you dont have to pay shipping.. they have a 6 quart for 30..

yeah sorry about the pics being so bad, I get a reflection off the glass and the camera starts auto zooming, is it normal for cakes to shrink and tan? or for the myc to be really thing except around inoc points, i think im going to buy another strain other than treasure coast, something that colonizes fast

i dont know about tanning.. that could be them drying out..
maybe your moisture content is messed up.. they shrink when they start to get fully colonized because the mycelium and rhizo's pull the substrate together..
im thinking you got it too cold or cooked the substrate so it's having a tough time to colonize.
usually takes about a month or 5 weeks for mine to colonize fully..
maybe use more than 1 cc per jar in your syringe when you inoculate.. that definitely speeds up the colonization times.. although veda_sticks will probably come up behind me and say that it has higher genetic variation blah blah.. if you're looking for speed you're not worried about that shit.
the ones here are definitely goin slow.. it's due to the cold atmosphere.. definitely going to invest in an incubator soon... and a pressure cooker :P
