Help with 1000 watt system. (problem solved)
    #7866855 - 01/11/08 09:19 PM (16 years, 21 days ago)

Ok ive had a new 1000 watt hps system running for a couple weeks. It runs from 7 pm to 9 am every day. Well It turned on last night like clockwork but a few hours later the light just stopped producing light. The ballast sounds exactly the same but there is no light. I have a warranty on both the bulb and the ballast but i dont really want to ship a 30+ lbs ballast if its a burned out bulb. No where on the ballast does it say what the output voltage is and i dont really want to risk burning out a 300 dollar voltage meter. Does anyone know an easy way to determine if the ballast is the problem or the bulb? If i knew what the output voltage of the ballast is than i could determine if its safe to use my voltmeter to check the bulb fixture for a current.

can you check the bulb for continuity???
I am not sure that would work with a hps though
with a normal bulb it would though
BTW I have my ballast in front of a box fan to keep the transformer windings cool

I put the voltmeter on ohms and tried checking the bulb and the voltmeter showed 0.L (what it shows when it isnt touching anything at all) I keep it in front of a box fan also (18 inch one) I'm not sure if that would even work on a hps bulb though anyways cause there is a gas tube inside it.

yep thats a continuity test alright.
yeah I was thinking of the gas also
another test would be transformer winding continuity test.

I cant take the ballast apart in any way or it voids my warranty. So Right now im just going to test the fixtures chord for continuity. I turned the ballast on with the fixture chord unattached to it. then slowly plugged it in and i could here electrical sounds in the area of the plug as i plugged it in so im starting to think it is the bulb. Its probably not a bad idea to get a new bulb anyways. The one i have has 2 pieces of broken glass in it. When i talked to the owner of htgsupply he said that was completely normal but if i wanted a replacement id have to send it in.

Ok so there is definately a current going all the way to the bulb. so is it safe to assume that the bulb is the problem?

Well i just got the replacement bulb from htgsupply today. They have been out of the cheapest 1000 watt hps bulb all month (which i knew) and they just sent me a bulb that costs 40 dollars more than the one i had replaced :-] And it works marvelously!

I almost hoped it was my ballast cause they are out of the normal blue 1000 watt hps ballasts also over the past month and if you order it they upgrade it to the next best thing for free.
