Cryonic preservation. Would you do it?
    #7866396 - 01/11/08 06:43 PM (16 years, 21 days ago)

Ok, so here's the question: Would you prematurely "end" your life to be cryopreserved with the possibility of later being revived hundreds of years into the future?

This is an interesting topic because it deals with the ultimate unknown of death. In order to be undergo the process of cryopreservation, you have to first be declared legally dead. That is, you can't be resuscitated within the limits of modern technology. Scientists believe that the brain structures that contain memory, personality and identity don't truly degrade until several hours after brain death. This is when the process of cryopreservation would take place. Now many people beleive that at this point, the human soul, if we have one, will have already left the body, and therefore can not be resurrected without the interferance of a God. So this begs the question, if you can later be revived, will you be the same person? Or just a thoughtless husk?

But what I wonder is, is it worth the risk? To be placed in cryostasis like this would basically be like travelling into the future, assuming it works. That concept simply amazes me. But if I were to try it, i would like to know that i would come back as myself and with a fully functional body.

As an interesting aside, more than half of the people cryopreserved today have actually undergone "neuropreservation", a process in which the brain is surgically removed from the body and frozen separately, with the body being discarded. The belief is that if are ever able to resuscitate people who are cryopreserved, we must by necessity have the technology to regenerate all kinds of body tissues. This is something I'm not sure if I would ever do...as you are literally putting your brain in another persons hands. And who knows what might happen when you have an entirely synthesized body. But apparently it costs $100,000 less than freezing your entire body....

Ideas? Insights?

If I did it and was never woke up then I would never get to experience death, so no, its not worth it.

the problem with cryogenic preservation is maintaining the cellular membrane integrity. when human tissue's are subjected to cold enough temperatures the water (of which we are over 80% of) freezes. This causes the cellular membrane to fail because of the outward explosive power of freezing water. when you defrost the frozen tissue the cells that have "exploded" will no longer be viable, and cannot function or reproduce. If there was a way to replace the cellular fluid with a fluid that would not freeze at low enough temperature. and then be able to replace that fluid again with the proper electrolytic fluids to allow the cells to become viable again once defrosted, is impossible with todays technology. So technically cryogenic preservation is just preserving the DNA in the cell and the outward appearance of the person being preserved.

Well everything disappears eventually. At some point, your frozen body would wither away into nothing. It is inevitable.

They actually do have a substance known as "cryoprotectant" that they inject into your blood vessels prior to freezing that replaces the water in your cells with a chemical that helps to stop this effect. They actually produced this and tested it with success in the 1990s. Although the process isnt perfected, they have reached the point where they believe that they can protect cellular integrity enough that future technology will be able to regenerate any damage caused by the freezing process.

That's good, because you have a little less than 5 years to be thawed back out to do something before it is all over....    :frown:
I have heard that if you are still frozen during the consciousness shift, it will cause brain-fart bubbles to manifest in the brain....

In the future with overpopulation increasing you think that they will want to revive a bunch of people who are so outmoded they are merely a drain on society?

yes i desperately crave it.

not enough to save money and actually do it, but assuming i had the choice now to spend all future monies earned on freezing myself, i would take that option.

honestly i do not want to die, and i feel like the future will be a wondrous place.

No, I wouldn't do it. I'd prefer to die in the life I know, and not in some strange era devoid of the features of my "old life".

Bumping cause i still think this topic is pretty sweet.

I think its very possible in the near future that scientists will be experimenting with reproducing an entire human body from head to toe. Stem cells can already be used to create organs. What if we reach the point where we can successfully transplant a human brain into a body? Would this prove that reincarnation is possible?

It depends on the definition of "reborn"....
Specifically, whether it be with totally new flesh, or just partially new flesh....

Well if you could put your brain on ice for a hundred years, and have it implanted in a regenerated body, or even a donor body, that would be as close as getting to reborn as you could get.

But on the other hand if we were to try this and find that the brain will never accept another host body, I guess that would prove that we have some kind of a soul that can never be recovered after we die?

Well her is the thing, this is a highly advanced technology that we are talking about, so i would have to have a guarantee, i.e. some sort of proof. I'm sorry but before i am willing to try something unpredictable before living out my life. That being said, should i have proof, i would have to consider it, and put the basis of my resurrection, on the basis that we obtain high speed space travel, or light speed, of that we meet, and make peaceful contact with an alien species, because that is truly a dream of mine, to travel out of our solar system, or meet an alien species. What would be more exhilarating.

Ruling out the option that we are all jacked into the matrix, I think that uploading human consciousness to a computer is a pretty long way off. Basically you would have to replicate a human brain with synthetic parts. I don't think it is just the energy patterns of our brain that make us we are, but it is the unique chemical and physical composition of our brain matter that produces those energy patterns. Who knows if its possible to replicate that through computers. Sending sensory input to our brains is more likely. I guess thats pretty much the matrix then huh....Well shit I'm not sure if i just talked in a circle or not, but I do know that I've been drinking.

Alright....well think about it this way. What if you could put your life on pause right now, come back 1000 years into the future, and trip crazy drugs from some planet on the opposite side of the galaxy, while sitting inside a virtual reality unit on a ship flying through space faster than the speed of light?
