What is the most psychedelic (academic) discipline?
    #7866254 - 01/11/08 06:10 PM (16 years, 21 days ago)

By psychedelic I mean the effect it actually has on one's nervous system over time; these effects might be increased openness, increased layered mind-states (a large consciousness), joy or spiritual states, and mental plasticity or resilience.

And yes, some disciplines (or combination thereof) will be more psychedelic for some than others, but I am speaking statistically.

Some candidates in my mind are:
-philosophy
-neuroscience
-psychology
-quantum physics
-astrophysics (e.g. general relativity)
-math (e.g. calculus, chaos theory, probability)
-art

I don't think that any class will have an effect on your nervous system. At best, you'll be brainwashed into the thought processes of your professor...

I remember being in DARE when i was much younger and some of the stories they would tell you are not only ridiculous, but completely untrue. One story was that a woman was on LSD and thought her infant was a turkey so she baked it in the oven. Now I look back and think thats hilarious, but at the time I guess it scared me.

well, not necessarily a class, but an area of focus: what you inquire about and investigate and work with, either academically, independently, or within a business structure

Nah, I think I understand you man. You definitely have to include music theory. Rhythm and Pitch are the same thing, just at different speeds/levels of vibration/frequencies? That's pretty psychedelic right there. Told that one by a friend, he's a head trip all by himself when he describes that stuff to me... or I'm just too out of it to understand, haha. It does feel like a different world. Math's probably pretty damn trippy too.

Chemistry, perhaps? Not psychedelic in itself, but it has some very psychedelic implications if you get good enough.

I opted for philosophy, but lots of that is still utter crap.

i noticed after i began to smoke the ganja on a regular basis i became obsessed with what made people tick and i took a class in psycology and it all seemed like common knowlege to me and same thing with genetics and evolutionary psycology with psycedelics. they just took it to a whole nother level.

Honestly I think the trippiest subjects mentioned there are quantum physics and astrophysics.

Math in general I guess.

They are all trippy subjects though, and can likely change the way your brain works to some degree.

Philosophy specifically may have serious psychosomatic effects.
Your approach to living in general always has some effect on your health.

That is a trippy question.

That is a trippy question.

Any mass of knowledge gives you new tools and a more massive consciousness, as all of these subjects are connected in a very obvious way.

In a more obvious way than lets say, what an apple has to do with all of those subjects at the same time.
That would be an interesting tripping exercise. To understand the apple to the best of your ability. An endless string of connections.
Your only as good at it as what you know about apples, and all of those subjects.
You could find some form of god in that apple or anything else that is rather pure or even impure(a form accessible to the human mind).

Thats why they are the fuckin coolest subjects ever.

Id also include biology on that list of subjects.............
Or linguistics, and the massive subject that we all assume is already totally understood but is not,......... evolution.

I'd definitely include linguistics; it's basically the practice of dissecting your thought processes.

I wouldn't say biology as much as ecology, since in ecology you try to see the organism and try to see the environment and you get into boundary dissolution.

Evolution? Yeah, its the question of what am I? That, and that, and that....

I want to say math in general too, except I don't really understand why. I think both Korzybski and Alan Watts said that our method of thinking is essentially calculus, although I don't intuitively see that.

Yes if art was explored, and expressed, and given the proper sensitivity to its powers, then every subject thereafter, should be interacted with/experienced through the motions of advanced art abilities.

Science and art are both invaluble tools, but they are rarely properly synchronized in thier effort

That's a little paranoid. If you have your own intellectual integrity you should be able to distinguish between the knowledge a professor is imparting upon you and his own views on that knowledge.

But choosing not to learn from someone in a classroom environment because you're afraid of being brainwashed is, imho, pointless.

well in my immihoho honest opinion, your right, exception the case when a professor is too far gone to be even considered conscious and sentient, account his indoctrinization and social "buckling"

Qunatum Physics
Neurology
Genetics
Art
Helping People (should be considered academic; there is a science to goodwill;-)

Yageman and Redgreenvines pretty much said what I woulda.

Oh, and Language, which in a way is the study of studies.
