Practice.
I play 6 instruments, sing, improvise... and singing and playing at the same time is still the hardest for me, and I started 10 years ago.
Perfect practice makes perfect

Being the person who writes the song makes it alot easier.
So if you write it yourself youll be abe to, but then itll be harder for sumone else to do it as they dont know the song like YOU do....
Unless theyre just a brilliant guitar player and singer!

You could start with easy things, what kind of music are you into?
You could start with Wild Thing. Simple chords, easy singing.
I learned how to sing on some Simon & Garfunkel. Took me 3 months, but hey, that was worth it.

I had the same problem when I first startedv playing. Its all in rhythem and timing man. Right now your brain is trying to do both seperatly at the same time. But like they said with practice it will all blend together. Playing while listening to music helped me alot

I've been playing for 12 years and this is still very hard for me. I think you need to practice and take it slow.

This definitely tough...but when you can "zen" it, you'll be amazed. By zenning I just mean letting it flow without trying to do anything. The more I get into my playing the easier this comes.
Other than that, make sure you know both quite well before you attempt it and break down your confidence. It may also help to sing in your head while playing to make sure that you're on time and all your inflections are correct.
I had an experience this last summer where I was playing after smoking some ganj and I realized that playing guitar can be incredibly easy, if you approach it the right way. I was able to play perfectly with both of my hands; coordinating then in time and with the stress/volume that I wanted...adding voice wasn't a problem as I felt like I had the "flow" of what I was playing. It felt more like I was the song and I was pulling all aspects of what I wanted towards me, in a cyclical pattern.
Now although I was stoned when this happening it changed my guitar playing and made me much more sensitive to the exact dynamic of each song; understanding it at a deep level, then basically letting it pour out of me.
Good luck and of course practice always helps!
edit: Justice_Fish mentioned starting with an easy song, which is a good idea. I started with "Fake Plastic Trees," by radiohead and "Karma Police," at the same time and it worked really well, esp with Thom Yorke's singing, you can flex the song however you want really.
I just remembered a tip about singing that I got from a friend who plays piano and sings; she said to learn one song really well because it will help the rest.
