Blue stuff on micelium
#7864927 - 01/11/08 12:55 PM (16 years, 21 days ago) |

Hi guys
This is the first time I grow shrooms. I have now 6 cakes fruiting.
Few days ago, a blue thing appeared on micelium and I thought it was an infection. I grabbed a cotton, soaked it with some H2O2 and rubbed on the blue thing. Nothing came attached.
I let it stay on the fruiting chamber, and now another cake has the same thing. Both of them don't have a single pin, while the other ones are fruiting very nicely.
Do you think I should take off this 2 cakes off the terrarium and send them to garbage?
Thanks

Take out the 2 cakes, just be sure. You don't want the other cakes to be contaminated, do you? However, you shouldn't throw them in the garbage (yet), it could be bruising. Can you post some pictures?

you should put them in the fruiting chamber with the others. 1. they are just cakes. They will not contaminate as easily as casings 2. its just bruising, cakes do not contam like casins unless you are on the 3,4,5th flush

bruising for sure. keep it wet. They do that because they get dry from you guys relying on perlite for humidity

It's bruising, but when it covers the middle like that, it's from being picked up. C'mon tahoe, you know better than to blame it on perlite. A terarium full of holes like I use still maintains 95% and above with perlite. It's the easiest and best choice for terrariums. RR

This is true, this goes along with my other common answer. Stop f-ing with the cake

I don't pick up the cake with my fingers. I pick up the plate that is under the cake...Eventually, when the water falls it can hit the micelium...

okay, then the cakes are dry. See how the center is skinnier than the top/bottom. The moisture is being sucked from this area and the cake is shrinking and the mycelium is bruising. It is normal. Hydrate your cake!

yea looks like bruising. they are probably dehydrated. just make sure you have 4 or 5 inches of perlite and make sure it is moist. if they haven't started pinning yet, you may want to give them another dunk for 12 hours. and mist 2-3 times a day.
also make sure you handle with care.
4 out of 10 of my cakes are bruised because of dehydration (my first light was too warm for the environment and i coulnt keep my humidity up). but i got a 6500k flourescent daylight bulb and humidity at 99ish% those babies are now fruiting nicely.

sort of looks PESA-esque, with the little nipply tops.

This second flush is being kind of weird. I didn't change anything at all on the grow, the mushrooms start growing up and then they turn their heads down or to the cake.
I thought it might be from the light, but it's the same at the same spot...
