this book is a must read for any dead head who has the ability to read, it tells the whole story of the DEad, from phils point of view, its 338 pages and i read it in two days, i just couldint put it down, a great book!
it tells about phils childhood, how he met jerry, how the band formed, how they got there name, and then he tells storys of there life on the road, and goes into great detail about many shows, and tours, including there performance at woodstock,
one of my favorite stories in the whole book is when after one of the members death in the early 70's phil freezes in the middle of the show and just stops playing for 20 seconds because he is so broke up over the guys death, anyway after the show jerry meets up with him back stage and grabing him by the collar of his shirt and pushing him up against a wall says: "YOU PLAY MOTHERFUCKER!"
i thought that was funny since jerry was so soft and kind most of the time,
anyway if you like the grateful dead and you want to know more about the band and there highs and lows over the years then you should read this book,
peace out Dm

actually Jerry pushed him down a small flight of stairs.....
but yes a great read...
I also suggest "Home Before Daylight: My Life on the Road With The GD" by Steve Parrish. Parrish was a roadie for the band, and Jerrys personal roadie and manager of the JGB. Its a great read, a different point of view then Phils. From the roadies perspective..you get alot more of the "drugs/sex/rockroll" angle...it does not dissapoint
