Addiction to video games?

I dont know why, but every so often I find myself reinstalling old online games and playing them for hours.... I just uninstalled UO for the millionth time in my life, and I certainly hope it is the last time. Video games can be just as bad as any drug.. I want to live my life and leave this shit behind....

What you need is to get the rush you get from the adventures in these games by having the real adventures in your life. I took up rock climbing to fulfill this. It has got me away from the computer, contributed to health with weight loss and exercise as one starts to set physical goals for accomplishment. It has improved my social life, and also brings me into touch with my mortality. When you climb your life is often in your own hands (or the hands of another) quite literally. The people you meet out there share a common bond and love of adventure. It teaches self reliance and trust. I have trusted people who were total strangers with my life by allowing them to provide my belay (safety) on a climb. Total strangers have trusted me in this fashion as well. The whole experience is very zen. I find that my desire to play video games increases when the weather is bad and I can't go climbing. There are many other adventures to have, but this one is mine right now. An interesting note: My avatar is a symbol that I saw carved into a rock face. I saw it as an omen that I was on the right path.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Online games are huge time wasters. I stay away because I know I am vulnerable.
Just don't get started with them.

Everything can be enjoyed in moderation. One just has to exert the discipline necessary to enjoy a balanced life. To purposely avoid something that one likes is just denial of the attachment that is there. What needs to be dealt with is the feeling of attachment.

best thing you can do mickdawg is just avoid them altogether.
a good example is me actually, I'm currently trying to quit smoking and I don't think anyone here would say it's ok for me to have one or two cigarettes sometimes.
besdies, I think once you quit playing video games, you'll realize how boring they are compared to real life.
real life ftw.

I can remember a day when the first thing I did in the morning on a daily basis was play Madden with my roommate for at least one game. This went on for a few years & the games rotated as we got bored. Nowadays, I have old buddies from back in my hometown who do nothing but play video games in their spare time. It's not that I can't be around them, it's just I can only be around them for so long because watching other people play video games is boring as shit. However, that's a Friday night to them. I guess it just takes certain kinds of personalities.

lol, yea, I've had roommates like this before. their idea of livin it up is gettin some busch and playing madden on the ps2.
i'm a guy and I just don't get the whole video game craze. i think pacman and games like that are fun from time to time, but shrooms, girls, the great outdoors, girls, and real life are so much more interesting in my opinion.

Thanks for your comments. Im fighting the urge to install counter strike right now.... I think part of the rationale for my addiction is to get the one good ending (like a perfect score or fight or some shit) that I feel I can get off the game with.... I just need to understand that that argument is part of the nature (getting one last fix) of addiction. I feel a bit anxious because I did not end my last minutes in UO on a good note, and feel like I should before I stop playing it... I think this is a little obsessive compulsive, which I have a history of, so theres no way I am going to reinstall that game, probably ever again. I will have to deal with this anxiety and find a way to learn from this whole experience ...
I liked the posts a lot that said to get outdoors and get physical. I agree that when I am outside running around and enjoying real life, video games seem ridiculous by comparison. I think ive found my new years resolution, which is to take all the energy that motivates me to do things I know are wastes of time, and channel it into motivation to perform activities that help me develop into a better person.
Thanks again for the posts... Have a good weekend all

I am/was a video game addict. I just uninstalled Age Of Empire today. What kind of rush in real life could be the same as winning in this game
But I told myself that I am not that person anymore. As soon as the game was uninstalled, I grabbed my guitar and started relearning (being lefty, I switched right-handed to a left-handed guitar. huge loss of time).
Music can fullfil a life, video games or not.

Here's a sure fire method. Indulge in games 100%. Quit your job, your school, do nothing but play games. You'll either play games until you die, or never look at another game with the same 'addiction' again.
-------------------- [quote]We don't need anyone to teach us sorcery, because there is really nothing to learn. What we need is a teacher to convince us that there is incalculable power at our fingertips. What a strange paradox! Every warrior on the path of knowledge thinks, at one time or another, that he's learning sorcery, but all he's doing is allowing himself to be convinced of the power hidden in his being, and that he can reach it. ive done it before and never intend to again
edit: oh BTW.... just like any other addiction for me the most effective way is to JUUUST STOP.... deal with the anxiety that may pursue for the next couple days, or week or so, and eventually, everything goes back to healthy and normal, and im gladder than ever that I kicked my addiction while I did...
