Azure jars timing lid removal
    #7863598 - 01/11/08 04:12 AM (17 years, 9 days ago)

My jars are growing nicely in a bin at about 77 degrees. I am waiting for them to be fully colonized before moving to my first spawn on chips. My question is how long should the foil and lids with filters remain on the jars before removing them? The mycelium is starting to moved toward each other but has not completely filled in. Should they stay covered until right before dropping them into the spawn bags? No info on this part of the process is in the books I have read or on the archives for woodlover's. Thanks

the foil should have come off when you knocked them up, replace it with a cofee filter and rubber band.

As soon as fastfred comes in he'll say to leave the foil on.

Describe your jars a bit more. The foil in any case won't hinder gas exchange but might produce condensation that wets your filter.

As long as the mycelium hasn't completely colonized the the substrate, you should leave the foil on. Unfinished mycelium is very vulnerable to molds etc. while matured myc is very robust.
Removing the foil now -no matter what substrate- would give molds a BIG chance to ruin your work!

Coffee filters are crap!!! A coffee filter is like trying to use a volleyball net to catch ping pong balls.

The filtered lid MUST remain in place until the grains are fully colonized. I recommend removing the foil after you take the jars out of the pressure cooker.

haha, i can see that, ive never had problems but its only as a backup anyways, for me, the tyvek should already be in place and the micropore tape over the inoc hole, the coffe filter is more to just keep it clean not keep out microscopic bacteria, they have always worked for me but they may not be the best.

They are still on and growing fine two pieces of foil and filter disk with lid. I guess I'm gonna wait.
