Is there a way to save this salvia?
    #7863379 - 01/11/08 02:16 AM (16 years, 21 days ago)

so i got this a couple weeks ago from a friend. it was a mature plant i guess, when i got it it was cut down to an inch above soil and had somewhat of a rootball, the cut stem was green and it had the new little sprout coming out of it. it didn't look that healthy but looked hopeful, now the original stem hass gone black and i am wondering if i can still save the little sprout with 3 little leaves before they go black too, i believe i have one more day before it's too late as it feels like it's about to fall off. any help is apreciated, thanks

That's a touchy one there. It is possible, but I'm not sure there a way of handling it that you can say it will definitely survive. I'd say cut off the green branch and reroot, but it's pretty small. It would require prefect execution and a bit of luck. Secondly, it looks like you have white dust particles on there, which could be mold spores. You might want to try getting rid of that with a q tip and some peroxide just to reduce any further damage they could inflict. Thirdly, I would say your soil is too wet, which is probably the orignal problem. Salvia likes high humidity, but the soil should dry out in between waterings. Even if you just watered, it's too much for a plant that's not using up a lot of water (because it's fighting for it's life). Too much water does not allow the roots to breathe. It will easily cause root and even stem rot. Now, I'd also like to add that I've had plants come back and thrive from dead stems like that. For now, I would clean it up, dry it out and put it under some mild flourescent light.
