Yeah, I agree with everything you said. I had just woken up when I made that post and I must have confused understanding with sympathizing.

Still, I challenge the meaning of understanding. At what point do you understand something enough to criticize it?
How much, or little, can anything actually be understood? I think, what with all being one, with everything being everything, that the whole of the universe can be understood in a dedicated enough lifelong examination of Sri Ganesha's left tusk, or a wine glass, or a bit of broken pottery, or the letter H.
That said, anything said in earnest deserves consideration. I gave scientology as an example because it's pretty clearly a scam from the get go. A cursory examination of L. Ron Hubbard's life, especially his own account of his life opposed to factual and recorded accounts, it's obvious he was at best a sheister and at worst sniffing glue. Or maybe, at best sniffing glue.
That's what startles me about Rael. Aside from buying his book, he dosen't seem to want any money from me.

That's subjective. Take your best shot.

If it's subjective, than the utterance that starts this thread is effectively meaningless.

crumblebum said: Well, frankly, I can say I don't really understand Scientology (because I haven't paid for access to all the literature), but that it is, in fact, stupid. I'm being serious. Sometimes, when something has a handful of keyt bullshit identifiers, it can be safely ignored. To attempt to fully understand everything we encountered would make us psychotic, but we judge by reflex. If someone says to me, "I have a machine which has no credible scientific verification outside the organization that built it, that can tell how in tune with your inner self you really are, and it is enourmously expensive to operate, requiring an eventual sum donation of as much as half a million dollars to be ultimately happy," I think, "Okay, well, that's a scam."
I don't need to read the literature on what thetans are. I don't need to consider the menace posed by this Galactic Lord Zenu. I can pretty much just say, "That sounds stupid."
Scientology is just as good as any other religion aside from the fact that you have to pay for it. It sounds stupid but doesn't a guy way up there who'll send u to hell and kill you if you do anything wrong but he loves you sound kind crazy too?

Yeah, pretty much the paying for it thing is the dividing line for me on that one. I might be interested in checking out some of their texts, were it not for E-Meters and whatnot.
