Getting Into Other People's Business.........

Why is it (general) human nature to get into other people's business....? Survival trait - based on fear (curiosity)....? "Keeping up with the Jone's" - dominant competitive urges....? Is the trait's purpose for seeking out "the best ways" for one to imitate behavior in one's own daily life - like program updates....?
Such a wide variety of circumstances just waiting to be sought out; reality shows, tabloids, news papers, porn, an accident on the side of the road, gossip, talk shows, the news, normal conversation, etc., etc....
What is the real purpose of this overwhelming human trait to market "other people's business"....? Supply and demand says that there must be a demand for it, otherwise it wouldn't be so prevalent....(?) Since a lot of life (in general) learns and acts based on the imitation of others, do people generally act this way because other people's lives are thrown at us at every corner....? (Or do people's lives get thrown at every coroner...? )
What's the dealio~....? Any thoughts....?

I suspect it goes back to survival of the most fit. Those that are more aware of what others are doing are in a better position to take advantage of others thus increasing ones own chances of survival.
From a "moral values" standpoint, I think that people try to force their moral values upon others to justify their own beliefs. Imagine that I stop eating fruit because God visits me and tells me that eating fruit is a sin. If I am the only one not sinning by eating fruit, I might start to feel a bit silly (as people tease me, etc). However, if I can get everybody else to stop eating fruit as well, then I justify my own fruitless diet. I am also closer to God, following the example given, and telling other people what to do.
More or less, a power trip.

The fact that I don't know something bothers me. Although, I'm not particularly noisy, I do enjoy gossiping every now and then.

Sometimes it's entertaining too.
I'd say back before tv and the internet what else would there have been to talk about around the fire but what's going on in people's lives.

We're social animals. I think curiosity is a lot of it but there are many factors. One big one I believe is to try to find people who are suffering more than we are so we can feel a little better about ourselves. It's not like the media is filled with stories about good things that happen to people.
