Hey gang,
My casing has mushrooms ready to be harvested. Each time a mushroom looks ready to pick it has already fallen over from its own weight and detaches itself. I have woke up in the morning to find a mushroom laying on the perlite under the tray, the damn things keep falling off the casing ones mature!
Is this normal or what? They are PRs and the stem is pretty thin, maybe the stem cant support the cap one it opens and murders itself.....
Any thoughts on this mushroom mass suicide scheme?

I've seen that happen with coco coir... It's not a problem though.

I`m growing PR on Coir as you know fd3000
And if you go look at my update grow-log you`ll see there`s nothing of the sorts happeneing.
You fan enough???
I don`t use perlite for casings, the humidity stays high enough when you mist.

Go to the toy store and purchase a large set of Konnetix (or whatever that scaffolding-like construction stuff is called).
Build mini-scaffolds for any 'shrooms that look like they're in danger of falling over.
You can also use the included little plastic men to watch over the 'shrooms. The 'shrooms are too dumb to know it's not a real human, and might stop their tricks.

I baught some chicken wire fence and im going to put it above the terr so once the mushrooms grow through the links in the fence they cant fall over, kind of like SCROG is marijuana growing.....

What are you doing fd????
You can`t be serious.
Add more water, fan more, casing more, etc.
Add more nutrients.
Don`t introduce chicken wire, it`ll rust as well.
Thye shouldn`t fall over, you must fan more for a starter.
Try things but by all means don`t build scafolding and chicken wire support??????

simple remedy...harvest sooner...size isn't related to potency so pick the suckers right when the veil begins to tear away and no more falling shrooms...
edited portion: adding crushed oyster shell to your casing will also help this...a good mixture to use in your csing is 10% crushed oyster shell by volume...

My PRs dont really have a visible veil, they just open.....
Just wondering why would oyster shell help? Would it give the mushrooms calcium and make they more hardy?

From what I've read it helps bind the casing together kind of like bread crumbs in meatballs or fiber in your diet. It may neutralize and buffer the PH a little too but I think powders are better than the larger shell pieces. I've never tried it myself though so don't take my word for it.

I haven't grown PR yet, but I do use the 50/50+ casing and I can tell you that with EQ they are hard to twist out, especially the aborts. I cannot claim this is because of the lime and oyster shell, but just my experiance. It's worth a try though.
I find EQs hard to pull out even when casing with straight verm.
