Strange Growth.

Four quarts of rye were inoculated with a Huatla? syringe that I got from Sporeworks. Those were then used as spawn in four Coir/Casting mixes at a ratio of 1:4, which were left to colonize for the last 5 days. Lo and Behold! Today, after leaving the subs be, I checked them and three of the four Huatla bulks were uncolonized, and had a strong sour smell, which I assume is some sort of bacterial contamination. Gay.
Anyway, One of the four doesn't smell, but doesn't look like typical cube mycelium. Here are some pics.

First of all, shitty pics, I know. They were taken on my phone because I am too cheap to buy a camera.
So, the first picture is the bulk in question. The other one is a Mazatepec bulk that I spawned at the same time that is just fine, for comparison. The bad bulk spawn looked similar in the jars (i.e. Fuzzy and puffy), and colonized the rye quicker than the Maz that I did at the same time, but no so fast as to be alarming.
Any ideas? Does some mycelium act puffbally like this or should I scrap it? I don't want to lose a third of my grow, but.... Any help would be appreciated.

The sour smell is more than likely bacterial bloom and fermentation. Not good. What temp are you incubating at?

Sometimes it does. I wouldn't throw it away. Wait and see if it fully colonizes before anything gets a hold of it.

I'd toss the ones with the sour smell! Also it looks like you have an overlay problem!
I don't really know what you mean by "puffballs" but a few days before someone described Primodia knots as "puffballs".

The sour ones are gone already. Also, overlay? No, not really. The puffballs are just that, puffy, and not reaching out with arms in the way you expect normal rhizomorphic growth to be. This one smells not particularly mushroomy, but mostly just the smell of soil.
I am going to wait and see, but mostly I am just curious to know whether this non-rhizomorphic type growth is normal, or some other fungus I've got growing.

Since you talked about the fluffy mycelium, I can tell you that is IS normal. I had that several times before and there wasn't any probelm.

Cool. I just am used to seeing arms, you know. I don't have high hopes for that sub. It's weird, though... These jars grew so healthy and well, then when spawned they failed, even though the Maz jars that were spawned to the same batch of sub have prospered. Who knows? Anyway, thanks for the input, and any other opinions are welcome as well. Also, Is bacterial contamination a usual occurrence in bulks? I had thought that that was primarily a grain issue.

they both look fine to me although they both should have been in the fc a week ago. Keep them wet and let them pin. The one on the right looks like it is pinning

I wish. They were spawned a week ago. I guess I should have said that. (edit: I did! ) The one on the right will probably be cased in 2 days, after I pasteurize the casing. The one in question needs more time yet. Shitty pics.

i just saw that it was coir/casting, it looked like colonized casing

The picture picture on the left looks normal to me. That is grain attempting to colonize the substrate. the picture on the left is that of Hyphal knots about to pin. That means you better case that baby soon! You'll be munching in a week or so!
