Lid prep.

I know there is like 1 million ways to prepare filter lids. However, I'm wondering what is the simplest way to make the lids using tyvek.

Easiest is one 1/4 hole covered by a piece of micro pore tape.

Some say 2 holes.

I was trying to find a tek today I seen before.

It looked so simple. You just cut a sqare larger then the top of the jar. You screw the lid down onto the tyvek and you put clear silicone(Rember you DONT need the hight temp) on half the top and bottom and leave the other half just tyvek. I think he used some around the sides of the lid to hold the tyvek to it.

Then you have a huge self injecting port and a huge fea hole.

If you have 24 hours, I use the tyvek with silicon, if you need them quickly, use the micropore tape over holes then reapply some after you inoculate.

simplest tyvek lids:

one square piece of tyvek bigger than the opening of your jar
one jar ring (no metal lid)

place tyvek over top, screw down ring over it.

do your sterilization run etc.  to inoculate, poke your needle right through the tyvek.  immediately tape up the hole left with a piece of micropore.  i like to swab the whole lid down with an alcohol wipe/cotton ball w/alcohol.

when finished inoculating your jars, we're gonna do one more step -  take a strip of duct tape about the size of the lid.  place it on top.  the tape will cover about 95% of the surface of the tyvek.  makes for a sturdy lid, and only leaves two little strips of tyvek exposed - enough for gas exchange, not enough that your jar dries out.  if you happen to use wide-mouth jars, use two pieces of tape overlapping to get most of it covered.

done!  i dare anybody to come up with a simpler tyvek grain jar lid.

done more jars than i can even think of counting now this way for more than a year, can recall 3 total contaminated jars (we're talking out of a couple hundred).  i have switched to silver duct tape though, so i can label them easily with a sharpie!

well thank you everybody, the input has been helpful. How about a way to prepare your own spawn bags? I don't know where to find 1/2 gallon jars OTC
