I do so because I was told by shroomydan.
Long live the self-exiled Ovoid king!
Also, I saw Mjshroomer's perverted ass once. In one of my patches. He asked me if I was looking for gold.
I said, "Yeah. Kinda."
Another time a park ranger thought I had a rape kit in my backpack. Asked me to empty it. Good thing that bag looked empty.
But that's not nonsense.
But here's the real treat, I'm going to explain how this poem from Through The Looking Glass is about a secret mushroom hunter being interrogated in England in the 19th century. I'll tell thee everything I can: There's little to relate. I saw an aged aged man, A-sitting on a gate. "Who are you, aged man?" I said, "And how is it you live?" And his answer trickled through my head, Like water through a sieve.
THEORY The person speaking is a "policeman" of some type, perhaps hired muscle. Also it can be noted that it is the White Knight who tells the poem in the text. I say this because he has an incomplete understanding of this encounter from the very start, but explains he will tell "what he can" i.e. what he knows to have happened. The narrator is speaking to a friend, someone who knows him and his occupation. My thoery is that the narrator's boss (perhaps a landowner sick of the Old Man tresspassing) tells him to go find out what it is the Old Man is finding (and stealing) from his fields. He said "I look for butterflies That sleep among the wheat: I make them into mutton-pies, And sell them in the street. I sell them unto men," he said, "Who sail on stormy seas; And that's the way I get my bread -- A trifle, if you please." THEORY The Old Man claims to "look for butterflies...among the wheat", perhaps he is trying to blow the narrator off, perhaps the Old Man wants to appear to have some screws loose, and it also explains why the old man is looking in the grass. Furthermore, he claims to sell them "to men who sail on stormy seas", i.e. foreigners, merchants, not locals. Basically he is saying, whatever I am doing, it doesn't affect your people (the locals). Also, the last line indicates just how much he profits from his endeavors, very little.
But I was thinking of a plan To dye one's whiskers green, And always use so large a fan That they could not be seen. So, having no reply to give To what the old man said, I cried "Come, tell me how you live!" And thumped him on the head.
THEORY Here our narrator begins to think strangely, but still wants to reach his objective, which is finding out the Old Man's objective while always tresspassing on his master's field, perhaps some personal curiousity is coming into play, also, the violence is indictive of one used to being respected feeling disrespected, perhaps our narrator is good at spotting liars and feels he is being told a half truth. His strange thoughts and apparent inability to listen could be explained by having perhaps drunk something the Old Man gave him (maybe beer with mushrooms brewed in it or the like), for the purpose of scrambling information, or putting others into questioning the narrator's sanity when he speaks to them. The narrator wouldn't have knowledge that the drink was spiked with mushrooms obviously.
His accents mild took up the tale: He said "I go my ways, And when I find a mountain-rill, I set it in a blaze; And thence they make a stuff they call Rowlands' Macassar-Oil -- Yet twopence-halfpenny is all They give me for my toil." THEORY Here the theory admittedly gets a little muddier, the Old Mushroom Hunter again tries to glaze over his actual activities. Perhaps the Old Man, is also a type of neighborhood apothecary, and grows marijuana and sells hashish tinctures, or hash oil, (the mountain rill his growing place, "set(ting) it in a blaze" a tongue in cheek reference to smoking hashish or marijuana. Once again, he claims to be a man of little means, saying he doesn't profit much from his labor.
But I was thinking of a way To feed oneself on batter, And so go on from day to day Getting a little fatter. I shook him well from side to side, Until his face was blue: "Come, tell me how you live," I cried, "And what it is you do!" THEORY There are divergent theories for this paragraph. Perhaps our narrator is tripping harder, and becoming increasingly agitated, so he gets increasingly violent. Also, maybe the narrator now knows for certain the Old Man has tried to lie to him, and assumes that the Old Man may be lying to protect some fortune. The lines about feeding oneself on batter, "and so go on from day to day, getting a little fatter" could be our narrator contemplating extorting or perhaps blackmailing the Old Man. But perhaps, the second half of the paragraph is a tongue in cheek reference to a primitive way to ID Psilocybe's, i.e. bruise them (shake them side to side). However there is a problem here. It is that the suspected species this Mushroom Hunter would have been gathering is Psilocybe Semilanceata, a species which rarely bruises because it mainly contains psilocybin, which is much more stable than Psilocin. Also, this would change the identity of the narrator, perhaps to the hunter himself, and he is merely pretending not to know of what he speaks, but any other hunters would be able to know their kinship through tongue in cheek references and nonsense.
He said "I hunt for haddocks' eyes Among the heather bright, And work them into waistcoat-buttons In the silent night. And these I do not sell for gold Or coin of silvery shine, But for a copper halfpenny, And that will purchase nine.
THEORY Once again the old man tells of his objective to be something small in the grass (Haddock's Eye's are small flowers which grow in clumps of grass). His reference of "waistcoat buttons" could be the Old Man drying the mushrooms, the cap ends up small and hard like a button, the stipe ends up looking like a piece of string (although the texture is not at all the same as string), and talking of "in the silent night" could be reference to the secret nature of his work. Once again he claims not to make much money.
"I sometimes dig for buttered rolls, Or set limed twigs for crabs: I sometimes search the grassy knolls For wheels of Hansom-cabs. And that's the way" (he gave a wink) "By which I get my wealth-- And very gladly will I drink Your Honour's noble health."
THEORY For the last time the Old Man throws out nonsensical hobbies which involve closely examining the ground. Addmitedly I can't place the limed twigs and crabs bit. But then the Old Man is trying to be confusing according to the theory. However, when the Old Man winks and offers to drink to the knights health, I believe this to be reference to the Old Man offering a bribe (perhaps a very special drink (mushroom tea), perhaps coin, perhaps plain old alcohol) to our narrator to blow to whole thing off, report back that the old man was crazy or the like.
I heard him then, for I had just Completed my design To keep the Menai bridge from rust By boiling it in wine. I thanked him much for telling me The way he got his wealth, But chiefly for his wish that he Might drink my noble health. THEORY Although the strange thoughts continue, our narrator "hears him then", and thanks him for telling him "the way he got his wealth", i.e. he accepts the bribe and pretends that the Old Man has cooperated as referenced in the lines "but chiefly for his wish that he, might drink my noble health".
And now, if e'er by chance I put My fingers into glue, Or madly squeeze a right-hand foot Into a left-hand shoe, Or if I drop upon my toe A very heavy weight, I weep, for it reminds me so Of that old man I used to know-- Whose look was mild, whose speech was slow Whose hair was whiter than the snow, Whose face was very like a crow, With eyes, like cinders, all aglow, Who seemed distracted with his woe, Who rocked his body to and fro, And muttered mumblingly and low, As if his mouth were full of dough, Who snorted like a buffalo-- That summer evening long ago, A-sitting on a gate.
THEORY Now, years later, our narrator wonders what that Old Man was up to, and remembers his trip and what it all could mean. He speaks of the Old Man as "a-sitting on a gate". In my Opinion, he means a gate between worlds. So ends Toe_Jam's thoery,
