Sweet. Uncased coir fruits wonderfully. I've also always liked mixing various substrate ingredients together. They work great, whether layered or mixed well, as shown above. Nice pics! RR

Thanks for the pm RR
Coir contains nutrients, this is known. A true casing layer is a non-nutrient layer applied to a substrate, this too is known. Try fruiting from straight straw-nothing really to brag about(wait, let me go back to my mycotopia days=it works for some, lol) Try fruiting from straight WBS = yeah, right It can be called what-ever you want to call it. I use it as a casing layer-you call it layering substrates, thats cool. When added to a substrate as your casing layer(combined substrates) it produces great results like these. If I didn't add this layer I would be fruiting from WBS/Straw, I don't like Verm, peat, compost, worm shit or what-ever else there is,lol. This is the easiest way to experience "casing"-you add nothing, it can be sterilized without an outburst of bad bacteria or it can be pasteurised too, just add 1/4" for every 1" of your(main)substrate and mist to field capacity and WAH-LAH mega bunches of shrooms.
Try it as a casing layer you wont be disappointed.
Anywho I got to go to the Doctor!

I have a couple jars of BRF, vermiculite, coco coir, and WBS colonizing. (Just to see if it would work, and if so how well.) It took about 3 weeks before anything happened, but now it's threading mycelium strands like crazy. I'll try casing (or "stacking") with 100% coir and see if I get anywhere near your results.

no poo in the straw? how much of a dry weight do you average off your trays? what size are those trays and how thick is the substrate?

None, just straw and WBS mixed @ 4:1 (approx)
Quote:
what size are those trays and how thick is the substrate?
The first tray is about 8"X8"X5"deep and the others are twice that 8"X16"X5" deep. The substrate was about 3 1/2" - 4" deep The coir casing layer was approx 3/4"-1" deep
Quote:
how much of a dry weight do you average off your trays?
That small one yeilded around 26.33 grams dry on the first flush The bigger one yeilded 59.58 dry grams on the first flush
If I can get this picture off my phone I would show you a 700+ (wet) gram first flush from the same containers(the big ones)-I could mail you the phone(J/K)lol.

Yes,
but with better spelling(J/K)
I spawned WBS to straw = yes
I cased with coir = yes

2+ ounces of dry weght from a little less than a square foot of surface area is pretty damn good. my trays of poo/straw/wbs are about 6 sq. ft. and net me about 8 ozers dry. and you dont even use the poo? you know, it takes so long to prep the poo. i'm wondering if i might try a tray without the poo and see if i can get a better flush. doc, do you go for third flushes or just jump to new trays? i wonder how i'd figure a 4:1 ratio when dealing with trays that big?

I very rarely go for a third flush unless I only do one or two of them. When you do a few of them at a time, it pays to just flush-and-go, although I have had some nice third flushes.
Don't drink the water, lol, its the key!
I have used quite a few poo's(with mixed to no results) and I think cow/horse shit is the shit of all shits, lol and if I had access to it I would use it, but I don't unless I buy online(would rather gather it myself) so, no I didn't use it in these casings.

I always take my syringes an inoculate an LC(Karo/water) to see if its viable or not(Better than wasting a bunch of jars for nothing), then I use that to inoculate my jars once I see it's good. It cuts off over a week(may be two) on grow time by doing that, for me anyhow.

I miss that part, going into the fields of shrooms and gathering poo(and shrooms of course ).

awsome hope my next grow (trying a new complex substrate mix) turns out that well. good luck with future grows! (although it seems you don't really need it)
