issues with multiple casing flushes
    #7857704 - 01/10/08 04:12 AM (16 years, 22 days ago)

So I'm having some issues with 2nd, 3rd, etc flushes off of my casings. A typical tray will have a 1/2" bottom layer of 50/50+, about 2 inches of colonized rye grains, then about 1/2" of 50/50+ for a casing layer.

After casing the rye, it takes about a week and a half for the myc to grow up through the casing layer. All good so far. I then get absolutely crazy pinning, as in probably about 20 pins per sq inch on the casing. Unfortunately most of these will eventually abort, and only about 1/4 mature fully. After harvesting, the casing layer looks like a warzone with so many aborts and divots created by the harvest.

I've tried various different things after this point, some of which are:

1: picking all the aborts, dunking, recasing, then misting
2: picking none of the aborts, dunking, then misting

With 1, I will get another flush, but it tends to be small, and it takes time to recolonize the casing layer. Doesn't seem to be the best way

With 2, the second flush starts a few days after the harvest, but I risk contams with all of the aborts that start to rot

Essentially, what I'm asking is:

What is the best way to deal with a casing after the first flush harvest? Advice on misting etc after the harvest would be helpful too.

First of all, skip the bottom casing layer. It increases the chances of bottom pinning and those pins can go unseen and rot.

And here is a very useful link on casing.

thanks for the link, I'll be sure to try it w/o the bottom layer
