WASHINGTON (AP) - A lot of young people are using cough and cold medicine -- and not the way it's intended.
The government says more than 3 million people between the ages of 12 and 25 have used the medicine to get high.
In that age group, that's even more than are using methamphetamine.
The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 2006 survey on drug abuse and health finds that more than 5% of teenagers and young adults misused cough and cold medicine.
It also finds that the people in the age group had experimented frequently with illicit drugs. More than four out of 5 had used marijuana.
The cough suppressant DXM is found in more than 140 cough and cold medications that are available without a prescription.
The ingredient, taken in large amounts, can cause disorientation, blurred vision, slurred speech and vomiting.

You know, I don't really know if they thought about this, but when you put a psychedelic chemical into an OTC medicine, it's GOING to be abused.

I heard this on the radio today.
The first thing that popped into my mind was "Well if they had access to an honest source of education about drugs (not D.A.R.E. propaoganda) and a source for a legal high (ie. legalize pot and or shrooms) this wouldn't be a problem."
But nooo... Let's just treat the symptoms and not the problem just like always..
Most likely they'll pull all the cough meds off the shelf until they come up with a substitute that doesn't get you high but in 10 years or so they'll release a study that lets us all know how the new drug causes cancer of the ballsack or some shit like that.
Sorry, when it comes to US drug policies and propaganda I tend to go off on a rant...

God, I love DXM (does that get me banned), even DMT can't touch the 4th plat!
I read this in the paper today... back it he 90s I manged to toast myself hundreds of times, some of the best times I had fucked up.
Thank god I am (all right?) today...
I mean, no one has ever died from the syrup. Its when they start popping cough pills it gets all bad...
but this is just a one time thing- anyone thats EVER abused OTC cough meds. My mother will even take a double dose of Nyquil sometimes...
These statistics are not for people USEING DXM, just people that have taken more than they should of.

I don't understand the relevance of this comparison. Is it just an excuse to mention meth?

The meaning is irrelevant, which is why you cannot find relevance in the comparison. The reason is important. The author is trying to get you to associate the problem of children abusing cough syrup with the problem of children abusing meth. We have all been well schooled on how bad meth is. Nothing more than "guilt by association". So much for objective journalism.
