Er, not throwing any ideas out  Just saying what works for me.

I use glasses with foil lids. Turning those upside down is a not a great idea, as it would increase the risk of contam by opening a path down the side of the foil. I've never needed to turn them upside down as gas exchange is excellent with foil lids.

To explain the utility of the foil cap you must first understand that contams fall downward. You do not need an airtight seal and you don't need a filter. What you must do is make sure that there is no path whereby contams can fall downward into your culture.

My dog Mr.Moogles has done a few hundred cakes without the dry verm layer in open air with just placing a flame sterilized piece of tinfoil over the punctured tinfoil.

And this is going back two years or so in a drafty mold spore laded basement.

I doubt you will have issues unless your sterility technique sucks but I have faith in you.

Or use the micro poor tape method after each innoc

I did/do the following.

1. Fill glass with sub
2. put 2 pieces of foil over them
3. pc
4. cool
5. move to glovebox
5. remove top foil lid (putting shinny sides together seems to help here  )
6. Noc through bottom foil lid
7. Put top foil lid back on.

Job done  Bigger cakes  No contams so far

I forgot to put the dry barrier on one of my jars and it was 100% colonized in a week, without contams. The others took normal time (about 4-6 weeks).

My conditions at home are optimal. I usually keep a clean house anyway, but before I do a batch I clean the house well, myself, my supplies and I'm as clean and careful as possible when preparing my jars.

For my next batch I plan on skipping the dry barrier on all jars and look forward to seeing pins in half the time.
