First grow success!! w/ pics and questions
    #7856729 - 01/09/08 10:50 PM (16 years, 23 days ago)

SWIM is doing a little grow.  He did cakes years back but we can just say he has never grown before.  He was not very successful.  I am giving him advice long distance thru help of pics and constant communication. (i'm retired lol ) He has cased rye and wbs (1" thick) with 3/4" to 1" thick layer of MGMC.  He has a pmp that sits around 70-72 degrees and between 85-95 rh (drops when fanning). The strain is cambodian.

My question is this.  His first flush was very small.  shrooms approx 1"-3".  From looking at the pics, which i am about to post for you, i'd say his casing is too dry. I told him to increase spraying and that next time we would include a bottom casing layer and/or possibly mix some verm in w/ the grain at casing time.  Is this good advice?  Do the pics show a casing layer that is too dry???  He had too many holes in his PMP and fanned too much is what i told him.  So he's nixing the fanning, his pump should give him plenty of FAE.  I don't need a huge discussion, just agree or disagree lol.  I've UTFSE a lot and this is what i gather.  just seeking confirmation.

One of the casings is WBS and the other is RYE.  If available water is the culprit, i'd guess that the top pic is Rye and bottom is WBS.  They are labled but i don't have access to them to check and my friend is not responding

More substrate! 1 inch in those little trays won't give you the gigantic monsters you see coming out of the tubs.

edit: cute lil casings, btw!

Such a thin layer of substrate will cause those minishrooms. Aim for 3 inches at least, but don't go too thick either.

[I have found that in a 16 qt sweater box that a half brick of coir and 3-4 qts of spawn will give you a nice 4 inch or so substrate, thats how I always got my best results

UPDATE [Re: Blutjager]
    #7921620 - 01/23/08 08:24 PM (16 years, 9 days ago)

2nd flush pics here. SWIM added more water (misting and rehydrating) and increased FAE (bigger pump). We're not complete amateurs I guess. 1st flush off 2 quarts rye = 21 gms dry. Not great but i've done worse personally. 2nd flush coming in at 1.5 zips dry. 3rd flush incomming. Overall thoughts are that casing layer (actually i mean substrate layer) is too thin and hydration needs help. Increasing to 2" + casing layer(substrate layer) for next casings and adding small amount of sterilized verm to grain at time of making casings. PMP is dialed in (been adjusting # of holes in top) and ready. Also, SWIM took too long incubating forcing too much patching of casing. SWIM will only incubate for 3 days like i told him before birthing on next set. Hopefully this will improve an even pinset.

So yup. Here's to the next batch of F+! Cheers dudes!

The miracle of grains is that it is perfect for spawning to bulks. If you really want to increase your successes as a beginner (like me), make a clone LC and spawn to four inches of bulk sub.

you could do ALOT more with 2 qrts of spawn then 21 grams dry off your first flush

FrizzleFry,

Careful using the terms 'casing layer' and 'casing' ......

You stated your casing layer was 3/4" to 1". This seems adequate .... maybe even on the thick side.

People are referring to the depth of your substrate (grain) .... and encouraging you to make it thicker or spawn to a bulk substrate.

Spawn to Poo (if you have access to it) or Coir/Coffee Grounds (80/20) ... or a combination of the two with some straw ... and throw in some vermiculite (maybe 10% of the total for water retention and texture) .... make this layer 3" to 4" deep ... case the bulk substrate and mist and fan. The result will be much bigger fruits.

Good Luck MAN

you need a wwwaaaaayyyy thicker substrate and a waaaayyyy thinner casing... you should only case an inch deep if your substrate is, like, 4 inches or more... at least double the amount of substrate you are using and only use about 1/4 inch deep of casing.. other than that, he should be good..

I will admit that i did have a bit of bourbon in me last night when i posted that.  I meant to state that he would be increasing the substrate layer depth, not the casing layer.

I'm all about spawning to a coir/coffee mix.  I've been trying to get SWIM to do that but you've gotta understand that I am helping this guy do this from a hundred miles away.  When I say SWIM i really mean it, not tryin to cover my ass   He is not comfortable with that step yet.  It was a hobby of ours when we used to live together years ago and he is attempting to get back on the ten speed bike he rode then and be successful with that before upgrading to the crotch rocket that is a spawn run   I will try to get him to attempt a spawn of coffee/coir/verm.  Thanks for the advice guys.  BTW, thedefone, I HAVE convinced him to attempt an LC clone so thats a start

one inch is too thick for casing... you have to make it thinner..
