no fucking way
recently i just spent a week without electric in the fucking winter.
fuck that.
I've also spent time in the caribbean where it was basically third world country, with people living in houses with little or no electric, not water pressure, etc.
I'm not a 5-star resort hotel person myself, but living conditions can get quite miserable when you're "off the grid"

I'd need a generator and top tier satelite internet.
I kinda like the wind turbine idea, with a small solar setup. Initial cost is the only thing.

Also alot of people haul water around here, http://www.tank-depot.com/product.aspx?id=130
or if you really have some flow, get someone to drill you a well...
as for heat and cooking, firewood and propane..
and my friend just put in a new "alternitave" septic system http://www.alternativesepticsolutions.com/about.html#

i was not prepared for all the changes i had to make this summer when i went to the off-the-grid farm
mostly with food preparation/cooking (which believe it or not will affect most aspects of your life when off the grid)
but not having any sort of light at nite also bothered me cause i couldn't read or write to fall asleep (and it gets old winding up the lantern every minute to see)
but i have been cooking almost the exact same way as i will have to when i return (or go to another off-the-grid farm) minus that it would be a wood-cook stove instead of a range
i think also not having anyone else with me started to bother me. the family was very sociable, but they had kids and also needed their alone/family time. i like being by myself a lot, but this was completely different.
i'm ready to give it a go again, and now that i know what i have to do, i feel more prepared and that i can succeed this time...but it'll most likely be spring of '09 before i go back

with good planning living off the grid is pleasant, you still have the same amenities and you can sell surplus to the power company

as soon as my fiance and I buy a house i will begin cutting ourselves off of the grid. our own power. our own food. everything i can do myself, i will. still going to have to use the grid for internet connection and cellphone though. so i guess no, ill never fully be off of the grid.

why? to see if it was the lifestyle for me. i still don't know for sure if it is, but i didn't really give it much of a chance either.
but why would i want to? because for me, a lot of the things i and we do on a daily basis are not right (note i said for me)
because there is so much stress and bullshit and lack of health in this lifestyle.
because i want to live the way my ancestors lived and the way people lived thousands of years ago
because i am an animal and don't want to be told not to pee or poop outside, not to scream at the top of my lungs (without having police coming to my door), not to run around naked if i so choose, how to raise my children or what i should put in their bodies and my own
another huge thing for me was not being able to listen to music. my host family was smart and had a few small solar panel generators (enough for one lightbulb in their house and a boom box, and then two for the electrical fences in the garden and pasture. next time i go out, i'm definitely taking a disc-man, headphones, and rechargeable bateries

this is my plan. i am going to have several different power sources all working in unison. wind, solar and biodiesel powered by castor bean oil. castor grows like wildfire, is a perfect fuel oil, lantern oil and has many other uses.

Wind turbines will go woosh-woosh-woosh-woosh all day and night, they are an eyesore and on the whole they tend to deliver 1/8 of the energy output they're made for because a slight decrease in wind = a huge energy loss.
Solar all the way, but it isn't cost effective yet. It still costs more to set up solar panels than it will yield.
I persuaded, almost coerced, my father to install a solar panel on his ship on his longterm boat trip around the mediterranean. He was skeptical at first (and at second) but now he's so thankful I talked him into it because one panel (2x4ft I believe) in a sunny climate brings in a lot of juice for his battery array, while they're anchored in the middle of nowhere they can have icecold beer and whatnot without having to run the noisy engine and spend fuel for generating electricity. He's looking into the viability of a second panel.

I'm not too sure, but you can setup alternative power sources like PV solar panels(if you can afford them and you probably couldn't) and what ever else, if you can make your energy production through those panels exceed your energy spending, you can essentially have to electric company pay you for adding power to the grid, while living with no electric bills.
The technology isn't really perfect right now because they really only currently work at like 15-20% efficiency, but it's definitely something to look into in the future. Even if it is expensive it's a good investment and eventually pays for itself.
I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Conventional wind turbines maybe noisy but just as solar panels are becoming more efficient and new ideas are used the same is happening with wind turbines. Recently a company PacWind has created a series of vertical, not horizontal windmills that run quietly and generates power at low wind levels of 5ish mph and up to 100mph. The company was featured in Popular Mechanics in Jay Leno's article corner and he even bought one himself for his shop. The coolest thing is you can stack a couple of units together.

at the time mostly food from the grocery store, but now I know how to fish and hunt. Elk meat will keep for a couple years in a freezer, or you could learn how to smoke it..only thing is keeping it lit. We got one of these.
http://www.barbecue-smoker-grill.com/41-0201-w.html
Critical thing is internal temp at smoking of game meat must be above 160o and storing temp must be below 40o to avoid E. Coli and other nastiness. Crucial attention should be payed to kill shot and field dressing. I don't want to go farther into this without physically being present. You can SERIOUSLY DIE if this process is not done correctly.

I plan on it.
Not because I hate society (though I have LOTS and LOTS of problems with it.) but because I see no need for all the things I'm "paying" for right now.
I don't need to work 40 hours a week so I can pay for a car that will take me to that job, hormone laced meat that I can get for free and with no hormones in the wild, and a boring square shaped apartment that only serves for me to sleep in between work shifts.
Again, I have no problems with people. I'm just a primitive at heart, and have little interest in material goods.
I also believe to be truely free you HAVE to be independant. No sitting around for Mr. Repairman, or hoping they fix the power plant, or starving because the local grocery store got blown up. It would also be ideal to do things on your own time and not be scared about being late at work all the time.

seriously, you can move off the grid anywhere theres like a 1/2-1 acre of forest if ytou go underground with the moles and then when the tree killers come u must defend the forest like the loraxian gorillas

i own an off grid farm except for the phone line. i use a 15k diesel generator to charge 12 8d agm batteries. we use around 5 gallons biodiesel/diesel daily to do the charging. the charging lasts for about 8 hours and then we let the batteries drain low until the next charge. it's pretty expensive but we have all and more than enough electricity to do evrything anyone else can do. we have washer/dryer, irrigation pump, house water pump, lights, electric oven/stove, refridgerator/freezer, indoor plumbing. our heat comes from an outdoor wood furnace that pumps hot water to our water heater and exchanges the heat. it also heats our house, greenhouses, barn, tool/biodiesel production shed. the worst thing about the farm is that someone has to almost always be here to maintain it all. it also takes alot of time. having said all of that, i would probably do it again, but make sure you have enough money to do it and learn to do it yourself as i did. i had to learn electrical installation by myself, but it wasn't that hard. we are a certified organic farm too and sell produce and berries around the eugene area. you're more than welcome to come visit the farm if you like or do some volunteer work in the summer months to see how you like it.

i'm not even sure who wwoof is. i'll google them though. we're on our own and we've been farming for only four years. we are tzolkin farm, you may have seen us at the eugene saturday market. we were only there a few times last year though since i was building a large 20'x40' greenhouse and wanted to get it done by winter. did i mention we have a small woodmizer sawmill that we make all of our own lumber with? we don't even have to cut trees. we just go out and get the logs off the roads after wind/snowstorms. we had a volunteer this last summer and we were going to build him a cottage but never got to it because of the greenhouse. the plan is to build an intentional community here or sell it. i'm trying to do both, but whichever comes first. it's way too much work for myself but i love doing it.

yeah, there's already a tipi set up although it's starting to decay along the bottom where it touches the ground. we don't take it down and noone stays in it in the winter. it can sleep 2 people or possibly more. with some dedicateed love and work it could be nice again though. you could put up something else too if you have it. there is plenty of produce when it's in for volunteers and to sell. we usually start the season in may/june with ripe brocoli and strawberries and end it in october with tomatoes, corn, berries, etc. with the new greenhouse we should be able to extend the season too.
