reason to worry?
    #7854972 - 01/09/08 05:34 PM (16 years, 23 days ago)

so i have good pinning in my casing but when i checked on it today i came across two things that concern me:

1. the first and biggest pin is now starting to get covered in mycelium, as you can see in this pic..any idea what may cause this/is it normal?

2. when i took a closer look in a different corner of the casing i noticed a slight discoloration in the mycelium.

Those looke fine, that happens when you have really high humidity, in my FC with perlite i get mycelium growing on the bottom of my stems about an inch long. I sometimes get tiny patches on the caps too.

I see the discolouration, this could just be bruising, keep an eye on it If it is a contamination it will grow rapidly in the next day or so.

If it is mould, theres not much that can be done, covering the area in salt paiste may slow it down enough to finish the flush then discard.

Best Of Luck
Try taking a q-tip and swabbing the area of discoloration. If it wipes of it could be mold spores. If it doesn't than it's probably just bruising.

i used the q-tip and gently tabbed it, nothing came off.

i feel like it might just be casing material shining through the mycelium since its not very dense around that area.. but yea i'll double check and post more pics tomorrow.

thanks for help!

mycelium on a stem is normal.

but what i see is is that it's predominately on one pin and not so much the others... soo... that tells us it isn't humidity, or anything environmental - so don't jump the gun and mess with your humidity.

so anyway, its not a problem BUT based on my experiences, that pin has aborted.  you'll obviously know soon enough... let us know if my prediction is right.

I forgot to mention that while high humidity can cause that to happen it does not mean u should try and lower your humidity.

I did however fail to notice that it was only 1 shroom

Out of curiosity, what did you case that with? I see that you're getting lots of pins and looks like you'll get a nice flush, but am I the only one that thinks that the casing layer is overlayed tremendously?

you are right the casing is overlayed in most spots but i have fruits growing all over now. im not really concerned since the strain is golden teacher and therefore the fruit bodies will be heavy mothers..

i cased with peat moss and perlite.

but yea its my first casing and i didnt really patch a lot and i think i might've put it in the fc a little too late. but i learned from my mistakes and the 2nd casing should be turn out better.

here pics from right now.
