taking a foreign friend of mine to new york city!
give me some ideas on interesting things to check out or do... attractions, events. things that easily may have slipped my mind.
what do you think? what would you do if you were in the big NYC right now?

living in NY is hard - these days its all geared to tourists, who dont want to do anything interesting. steer clear of 42nd street.
its a safe bet to go to the Museums or Aquariums, they are very good in NYC - also enjoy the sushi you can get in the East Village or in Chelsea.
people watching is always fun - the subway entrance to 14 St Union sq can be interesting at night esp on the weekends. I like to walk, so the east village is the place to be.
Have fun. OoD

I'd goto the village, go out clubbing at least one night, theres so much shit to do. Just walking around in the city is fun because of all the whacked out characters you meet. I'd suggest hiring this guy to be your wingman http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/act/534121855.html

Take the C or E train up to about 72nd street. Maybe into the 80's. Get out, ask somebody which way to Central Park. Walk to the park. Walk into the park. Head south, generally, but get lost. When you get out of Central Park south, try and be on the Eastern end. Then walk. Just walk, heading south always, and watch the beauty of changing neighborhoods, the city morphing identities with each passing block.
Don't avoid 42nd street, just don't get suckered into it. Times Square is a part of this city. It's not the heart of this city, though the tourist board may want you to think it is so you spend your money there, but it's a part of the city. Stand there, bask in the glow of Virgin and Disney and Fox and imagine it 20 years ago. Needles, condoms, hookers, porn shops, trash central. Ask yourself if one is necessarily better than the other.
This city is best experienced outdoors and in motion. Sure, we have great museums, and beautiful buildings you can pay 20 bucks to stand on top of. But the best way to see this city is to walk it. Beat your feet against the pavement. Head downtown. Walk by the Empire State Building. It's far more impressive to stand beneath it than it is to perch atop it. Keep walking down. Head to 14th St. and Union Square, think about how Allen Ginsberg used to sit there writing his poetry, and watch as it now becomes Times Square junior.
Walk into the East Village. The shops, the bars. Get a drink at 2A, the corner of 2nd street and Avenue A - I suggest sitting on the second floor and watching life go by in the intersection below. Catch a rock show at the Mercury Lounge - five bands every night always for between 8 and 12 dollars.
When are you coming? For particular events I'd just check out Time Out New York. It is the NYC bible for nightlife and all manner of entertainment and activity.
Don't miss the Brooklyn Bridge. There's something about standing astride the midpoint of that bridge, feeling the rush of the cars underneath the promenade, the energy of two boroughs converging where you stand as you look out over the river, the Statue of Liberty, Governor's Island. Magic.

Oh yeah, he's gotten me laid every time I called him. The only problem though, is that I usually black out while with him and wake up in random places. I call him up though, and he tells me what happened. Last time he said I fucked a really hot azn chick.

Want to see some art? Check out this cross-section of the city: 23rd street to 29th street, between 10th and 12th avenues. Avoid 26th st., or whichever one it is that's covered with scaffolding. It's a rare block of Manhattan that's dangerous 24 hours a day.
Otherwise, those streets are littered with gallery after gallery, each chock full of free art. Sure you should visit the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, $5 entry and Alex Grey goodness, but don't let the buck stop there. There is a SHIT TON of art to be seen in Chelsea.
