I was always curious to know if I wanted to start a business, does any money come out of my pocket, i.e my personal finances? Or does the government provide loans for all of that?

My problem is I have terrible credit, and I am 25. I never really gave a crap about my credit when I was younger, so now that I do... I am working on making it better.  Anyways, I would love to open a bar/club but I know its alot of money involved. My question is with my bad credit would it even be possible to get a dream such as this off the ground? Or am I SOL? Anyone that has a bar/club or has ever run one PM me with any information you might have. I have so many friggin ideas, and I know what the people want. I feel like I would be very successful at this.

Seems that Uncle Sam is the only guy spending money these days. I know a few people who are laid off right now bcs they're in the home building industry.  They're hungry for work.  Right now the only guys working are the ones with Federal Contracts.

Anyone else looking to start a business in this area?  From what I read it helps if you can meet some of these criteria:  http://www.sba.gov/services/contractingopportunities/basics/identify/index.html

I was also looking at https://www.fbo.gov/index?cck=1&au=&ck= to see what kind of contracts are out there.

Thought it couldn't hurt to see if we can discuss the potential of coordinating shroomerites looking for work and match up their skills and any special criteria to see how realistic it would be to start a business with the intent to bid on Federal Contracts.

I've actually been looking in this direction myself lately. I really want something that will pay the bills without leaving me feeling soul-sucked at the end of the day. The three things I do that I most enjoy are reading, brewing, and teaching foreign languages. Of the three, I think I could make a go of it out of the tutoring stuff and possibly the brewing, if I can make it through all the red tape. I'm seriously considering starting both on a majorly small scale come January. Anyone else have any experience in this?

well tutoring is an option, a way to make some cash around campuses and schools. Assuming you charge a decent hourly rate, you will need to have customers scheduled often to make any money at it.

I would imagine that you could only get 10$/hr at most for something like that, and at that point, you are earning slightly more than a shitty job. although, if its cash, it would go a little further.

as for the brewing, you can usually at best (from what i understand) produce 12 ounces for around $.55 cents..... after figuring the cost of your bottle, equipment and time, i would guess a beer would cost closer to a dollar to produce. People will gladly pay up to $5 for a good home brewed beer at many concerts and festivals. however other opportunities to sell beer at a profit are few and far in between.

I've seen rates as high as $25-60/h for tutors.  Getting enough clients is the tough part and you usually have to go to their home to justify charging the upper end of that range.  So even if you somehow manage to get more than a few clients in one day, the max number is limited by your schedule and theirs and driving times...  You'd be lucky if you worked 4 hours in a day and your average would probably be lower.

On another note, when my ancestors came here from Europe, America was supposed to be the land of opportunity.  But I've been looking into starting a business out of my home and have realized it's just not practical here.  From the state initial and yearly filing fees and charges to the local required business permits and charges, it's just too much of a hassle and I can't afford it anyway.  And for what I want to do, I don't think I'm even zoned properly for it.  Paying rent in two places just isn't feasible either.  I would never start a business with someone else's money because that defeats the purpose in my view.  In addition, materials are hard to obtain, need permits, inspections, ridiculous storage requirements--I had to jump through hoops for two weeks being told that xenon was a "highly controlled gas" just to get a price quote, on an INERT GAS.  I'm sick of this crap.

So land of opportunity my ass.  I'm going back to Europe.

The going rate for tutoring around here is $10-15. I usually charge the lower end of that, assuming that they have their own materials and curriculm and are willing to meet me at the University library. Finding students here is not a problem as Auburn has both a decent Spanish program and a fairly well known ESL program. Throw in the homeschoolers who want me to teach their kids on top of that, and student finding really isn't an issue.
I actually don't brew beer, I mostly make mead and an occasional batch of wine. IF I can find a decent source for honey that's not outrageously expensive, I can make 5 gallons for about $25. I have several connections in the event/festival world, and could sell it easily. Believe me, I can barely keep this stuff in stock for me and my friends to use, and I've had multiple people ask if I've considered selling it. The main problem with that is finding a good honey source and the possible legal issues with it.
I think my big problem with both of them is that I don't want to quit my job before I know I can make it without it. But, if I'm working all the time, I find it hard to find time to put into other ventures.

im a big fan of people taking on 2 jobs at once, one self started, the other as an employee. that way should either one fail or take off your transition time (and time without income) is non existant

Do you think there's a way to create a brand to market your tutoring?  Being identified as the go to source for foreign language tutoring and maybe also as a source of income opportunities for other tutors.  Then you could make your mead to help retain your best clients and partners, which further enhances the brand's appeal.

I have no experience starting/running a business.  And yeah those regulations are a big turn off.  Playing online poker for extra income seems a lot easier but, If you have the skills to do so. I don't btw, but I think about it a lot.

Do you recognize any existing businesses doing something similar to what you had in mind?  I honestly don't think right now is the best time to start a business or be running one.  However, it might be a good to be on the sidelines planning on doing it.  If things get worst an opportunity may arise for you to finally jump in.  Hopefully the regulations won't prevent you from executing swiftly if needed.
