Cracker Dry In 8 Hrs?

So, I read up on some posts on drying mushies in food dehydrators. I found that it is good to dry them at low temp (around 90 degrees) for 24 hrs; however, my mushies were cracker dry in 8 hrs!
Im using an Excalibur Food Dehydrator. I am very happy with how fast they dried. Another thing i noticed is that some ppl were saying that when they dry they become only 10% of what they originally were in weight. Thats not true in my case. I got at least 20% of what I had in weight with fresh fruits.
Thanks to all the helpers on this forum. You guys are metal.

Nice, how warm did it get? Do you know what temp is max, before breakdown occurs?

I think that if you're only getting 80% shrinkage you're probably not drying them all the way through. Especially since it's going so quickly. Perhaps while they feel hard and dry, there is still moisture at the core. That's my two cents.

They wont snap like a cracker at 20%, they'd still be flexible. Im sure your dehydrator is fine, weight 1/10 (dry) is a standard, should aim for it if you can.

Are we playing a guessing game? My guess is around 300F.

Then they still contain water. Content of psilocybe cubensis is 92% water, 8% dry matter. Get all the water out if you want to store them for a long time.

My dehydrator goes up to 150 degrees. I kept mine at 95 degrees for 8 hrs. Yes, they do snap when I bend them... Im not planning on storing them for a long time, maybe make some organic tea...

psilocybin does NOT break down at temps that low.. as a matter of fact you can smoke it.. psilocybin is dephosphorylated in to psilocin when heated.. wich is fine since thats what you actually trip off of...

If they dry to 20% of original weight they where already partially dried when you weighed them wet. If not they still contain water. There is no chance that the density of the solid matter in the fruit body varies more than 1 or possibly(unlikely) 2%

If they are cracker dry, then they should break if you bend them. 95F won't affect their potency much. I've seen several threads on the issue "psilocybin and heat" and some claim psilocybin breaks down at 160F. However, I would recommend you not to use any heat, why take the risk? Fan dry them for about 12-24 hours and use a desiccant (calcium chloride) to make them cracker dry.

Maybe so, but then the heat degrades that psilocin further and hey presto, no effects

ive read soo much agruing about this topic when I do searches. This is worse than the stems vs. caps potency discussion.
Ive only fan dried so far, with little to no potency loss. I have since decided to buy a dehydrator. So ill have to learn for myself.

I'm not talking about a dehydrator, just about smoking 'em

Psilocybin is dephosphorylated to psilocin somewhere before 250C. Any heat will likely cause some dephosphorylation. Psilocin is rapidly oxidized and the rate is, of course, dependent on temp.
Smoking shrooms is not practical, although there has been some discussion on smoking extracts.

I for one would gladly rail some pure crystal psilocybin, if it wasn't for the fact that it would be entirely impractical to make and store, when you can just chomp down some tasty fungus-buddies.
I find the reduced comeup length involved with insufflated droogz to be a blessing. Especially with RCs, even though they hurt like shit to put up your nose.

If you could bend them, they are not dry. At 95F it takes ~36 hours to get them cracker dry and 1/10th of wet weight.

Heat and potency is a highly debated topic, so much so that even after much reading on the subject. I still dont have a clue.
I only dried mine twice, and was disapointed with the potency. But mine are from multispore so cant say if it was the drying.
I have read of several members drying theres quickly at temps upto 140 with minimal potency loss. There argument being that oxidisation is what causes potency loss. The quicker you can get them dry and out of air the better.
U just have to try it yourself. Drying them at the lowest setting does seem to be the safest method.
