MO - Altria group.

Altria group is probably my favorite stock. Its slow but steady and will probably give a return of 7 - 10% after you count its 4% yield. The last couple weeks have seen a nice increase in value as money is being moved into the consumer staples. Altria group is the maker of phillip morris brand cigs and will be spinning off its international unit later this month to increase shareholder value. Management continualy look at ways to increase shareholder value.

Its a little late to get in, but always worth a look. I thought i would praise this stock that is worthy for a small percent of your portfolio.

This is a very good pick, and I don't think it's too late to get in here. For those who are not aware, Altria was formerly known as Phillip Morris - the tobacco guys. They have huge international exposure and sales of their products are likely not to decline appreciably during economic downturns (of the type we find ourselves in right now).

Altria will be announcing the details of its company break-up plan, in which it intends to split itself primarily into an international and domestic division, though I'm sure there be other small fragments to spin off as well. The underlying value of these components when considered on an individual basis is closer to a combined $100, and the stock currently is trading at around $80. That could be a 25% gain in addition to however many quarterly dividend payments you take home while you wait. No doubt, in the current market environment plagued by recession fears and panic selling, MO offers a solid refuge for capital preservation with good upside potential for capital appreciation as soon as they move forward with their breakup plans - which should happen this year.
