HEy friends,
I am about to spawn some crumbled BRF cakes to coir. I just pastuerised the coir on the stove for 1.5 hours in a pillow case, also i added a bit of coffee and calcuim carbonate. I was just wondering didnt the hot water washed away many of the coir nutritiens?

Mycelium isn't really concerned with the nutrients that can wash away.
As they aren't plants (which need nutrients dissolved in water) but eat their own food they secrete their digestive juices onto the substrate, dissolving it and absorbing that dissolved substrate.
They actually consume the substrate in the same way you or I consume a steak and chips.

I don't know what effect that would have if any...I prefer to pasteurize my coir by putting the brink in a bucket and pouring boiling water over it. I let this sit till its cool and combine with spawn.

I don't think it counts as pasteurization but I too use nothing but very hot water to hydrate.Use about a gallon of water for every brick of coir

No pillow cases...I just combine a brick and boiling water in a bucket, Let it sit for 8 hrs or so, and spawn. simple as that.

Oh, yeah, filthy for sure....
BUT, if one uses the same bucket every time, and one does not mind putting away a filthy bucket, there is no need for cleaning.
More fastidious growers may wish to use an outdoor hose or spigot to rinse the offending bucket.

I do a pot in pot past. Works great. I get the coir to field, fill 1 pot with water. Bring that to 180 (found the sweet spot on the stove that will keep the temp there) and put the pot of coir inside. Let it sit for 2 hours and It gets to around 165. Seems to work well for me.
I am testing non past coir now and it's working well but did not seem to colonize as fast as past coir.

If you do this in a cooler that can hold the temp at 160o to 180o for an hour or two, that's pasteurization as I understand it.
