I would mostly agree with that.
The Republicans want to spend your money on defense spending. The Democrats want to spend it on social issues.
Nobody is going to NOT spend your money though.

Probably the only thing that you got correct was the first thing you said. While money for defense is mandated in the Constitution, I dont think anyone thought it would reach what it has today.
Trillions and Trillions and Trillions of dollars are not needed to keep this country safe. Invading Iraq is not necessary to keep this country safe. You could cut military spending in half tomorrow, and no missiles would come raining down out of the sky.
Defense spending is just the conservatives pet projects. Where Democrats see money and think "Oooh, Medical Care!", Conservatives see money and think, "Ooooh, B-2's!".
Acting like the Democrats have a monopoly on wasteful spending is just moronic. The only difference is what you want to waste it on.
Our national security is not improved one wit by your wasteful spending.

No, I do not pay that much in taxes because I am still going to school and do not have a full time job, but my family is in the top income tax bracket and are democrats. I am not the one getting helped out by most of the "social" programs, but I have helped out at shelters, and worked with kids who are and I have seen some the failures, and success. I think a lot of the government programs are pretty bad but that is why there are private charities. It is the republicans that don't want their money going anywhere except to themselves, that is greed. I am not saying that that is necessarily a bad thing, but it is greedy.

Giving handouts to assorted losers does not constitute "General" welfare ("Welfare" not yet having taken on the meaning of social programs when that was written). I'm not saying it does as a metter of fact. I'm just saying "General Welfare" is pretty damn ambiguous. When the founding fathers wrote that term, they didn't really give too many specifics. Whoever is in power is going to translate it differently.
It's really up to the supreme court how far you can stretch the term "General Welfare". Their job is to INTERPRET the constitution. If the democrats give a bunch of welfare queens some food stamps and the judges say it's ok.. so be it.
And I agree with you about defense spending, Even during the height of the Vietnam war it didn't get to 10%. 10% is still a lotta money though.. money that COULD be back in my god damn pocket.

The old "Welfare" is pretty much down but it has been replaced by a whole new bunch of entitlements.
Biggest is Soc Sec and Medicare/medicaid. By far.
