Do you listen to NPR?

For years I've posted here and talked with posters such as Krishna and GnuBobo who swear by NPR but I never really dove in. I'm in this stage right now where I'm trying to be more productive, and spend less time watching TV in the communal living room with roommates and more time in my room, listening to talk radio, reading, and writing. I'm fucking hooked on NPR right now. Soft voices, intelligent discussions, music to my ears.

What's great is you can download all sorts of podcasts off their website and load em on to your MP3 player. They've got tons of This American Life archived.

I wake up to NPR.

I've been a talk radio junkie for many years. NPR mostly garners my attention on the weekends. Car Talk, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me, Whatd'ya Know, A Prarie Home Companion. These are some of the programs that have kept me entertained for years.

It's only good in the morning, though. I wake up to it every morning, listen for about 20 minutes to hear about the happenings of the world, then I get up and shower, etc, go to work, then if I ever put it on after I get off work it's only classic music or opera or something.

We've got two NPR stations.

Our FM station is like you describe, talkradio sometimes, classical music other times.

Our AM NPR station is talk radio all the time.

I usually listen to NPR on my 50 minute / 7 mile drive every morning to work. Its cool, sometimes it can be redundant mass media, but it beats all the other unfunny radio shows (I hate morning radio shows) they play on every single other station.

Years ago I got completely burned out on all the ads on commercial radio. The poor selection of music my local stations played was not worth sitting thru all the crappy ads, so I started listening to classical music on the NPR affiliate. I would listen to All Things Considered and Morning Edition as I could, usually during my work commute. I also really enjoy Music From the Heart Space.

I don't have much of a commute anymore, and there is a super-hip non-commercial station out here that plays awesome music, so I listen to them most of the time. But I still try to catch ATC whenever I can. But I don't really go in for the "talk radio" shows.... give me NPR news :-)

nothing like rolling at the speed of gravity down the 405 though beautiful west la. On friday it was raining hard and it took, I swear, almost 2 hours to get home. But people in socal get really spooked when water falls from the sky

i only listen to NPR when i feel like pretending to be a stereotypical east coast intellectual. this is not a joke i really do listen to
NPR just for that reason.

that being said i think they have the best news programs i've ever heard. they have so many varied topics and its about real life things and not some stupid bullshit like someone getting stabbed or which celebrity or politician did what.

i like all things considered the best.

I listen to it sometimes waking up before work to see what's "going on in the world". Back in high school when I worked at a health food store we would listen to it on weekends in the store. Car Talk is good shit.

As far as news goes, it seems about like any other major media outlet. All the same catch phrases and politicalisms. All the same smearing and pandering to interests not seen while glossing over everything that doesn't really jive with the status quo, which includes the dominating political discussion and "consensus" about anything from "climate change" to the "general welfare" (ie: "It's Happening!" and 'It's National Healthcare!'). I figure most of the people you hear on this or any network are basically immersed in the whole newspeak and party line and they end up oozing it over the air like any good journalista.

NPR sounds like CBC radio one... I switched to CBC radio recently and couldn't be happier.  I feel smrter already.

Don't get much time to listen on my 4-minute commute

I used to listen to NPR when I had to drive to my job. I never really was into their politics, but I liked their random shows.

There was one piece they did frequently on how independant people made a living. One of these times, they did the band, the DRESDEN DOLLS (you know that song.. COin.., OPerated BOY.. lalala).

It was interesting to find out they made a lot of money but after paying all the people they needed to pay, took home maybe 15K a year. Talk about starving artists. They said the most money they ever made was 50K at once for selling that COIN OPERATED BOY song to an australian peanut butter company for a commercial. Poor suckers.

Anyways... yea... really interesting stuff. They get an A+ for covering the arts and exposing a lot of stuff going on in the world that the news outlets here ignore.

Their political programs are obviously biased though. I'm not a big fan of either Al Franken OR Bill O'reilly.... but when Al was on one of their shows, they gave him carte blanche to rant and never challenged him on any of his claims while when Bill was on it was nothing but "but Al said this and Al said that about you. Defend yourself NOW". Bill got so pissed he hung up during the interview. Sure he's a douche, but media outlets should try a little harder to not let their biasedness slip.

Well true...

But you're a band that's taken everything you have and thrown it at making a living at being music stars and the 50K you made on a commercial is probably the more you've made on selling an album through a label.

Sucks for them. That show made me realize how hard it is for indie bands to get by.

We've got two NPR stations.

Our FM station is like you describe, talkradio sometimes, classical music other times.

Our AM NPR station is talk radio all the time.

that's what it's like here. the fm station does Morning addition from 6am-9am, then classical until 3pm. then npr starts again and runs until 7:30pm. but we have an AM station that just does npr talk all day long.

if i have on the radio, it is 60% NPR, 30% other talk radio, and i listen to bob parlocha's jazz show in the evenings. part of the 'other' 20% talk is paul harvey 3 times a day and g. gordon liddy.

where we live, you cant even pick up television with an antenna, so we have the radio shows down pat.

oh, and we catch the grand old opry once a month, or so.

You know you are getting old when you start listening to NPR frequently. I certainly listen to it pretty often, in the car mainly. It doesn't hurt that commercial radio is AWFUL and I don't have satellite. Score one for the liberal media!

the bad part of NPR: PLEDGE DRIVES!

Yea... NPR is the only way to go (along with local non-profit channels) when driving around.

When I drove to work back in the day I started off listening to the local morning shows when i got outta college and started the work force.. after about 5 years all the dj's just ANNOYED the shit outta me.

It's like every radio station tries to find the people with the most annoying voices or personality to do the morning shows.

I used to listen to Kirk, Mark, and Lopez here in DC in the mornings. I used to be a pretty devoted listener. I won a contest where I actually picked the name of their comedy cd and got to be on the air with them and Kelly Bell. I COULDN'T fucking SQUEEZE a single word in because they'd ask me a Q and as I started to open my mouth they were all like BLA BLA BLA... By the time I got off the air I felt like an idiot because I literally didn't finish a single sentance.

Radio DJ's just love to hear themselves talk.

I used to roll around every Sunday listening to NPR with my Uncle and my cousins. We'd just cruise around the mountains listening, smoking, and enjoying the scenery.

In my area now I can only get segments of NPR. meh....

But I got plenty of free form, public radio and college stations in the area. Just don't get the talk shows during the day.

I'm not from Minnesota but Minnesota Public Radio www.mpr.org has good tunes to listen to online. Pretty eclectic lot of DJ's.

NPR is definitely great. And just about anywhere you go in this country, there's an NPR station, playing some of your favorite shows, as well as some original content, some of which tends to be really awesome. Like the NPR station over by Iowa City in Iowa has lots of cool jazz, blues, and indie music shows.

NPR > all other radio

You all should try listening on weekends, not just weekdays driving to work. They have some great shows.

Weekend Edition
Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me (hilarious!)
Car Talk

Lots more...

Most PBS stations are available online too, if you don't have a radio handy.
