actually, you stand a better chance on land. the ocean would give way allowing the plane to morph/bend and get utterly ripped apart, where as with land you stand a slim chance with a flat surface to slide on.

i think the biggest problem with land is the fact that you will hit a building
look at 9/11 supposedly 3 planes and they ALL disintegrated practically.
another couple planes went down in some other state and they "disintegrated" as well, so based on them flaky facts your chances are very slim on land

how about you hit the beach/land on one half and the water on the other?
everybody wins.

as said above, i think if the wheels are up, if you are able to steer it, there may be a chance it could glide on the water. i would plan it so i circled near a coast, ran out of gas so i slowed down even just a little bit, and try to glide in towards shore.

So Atheist, what is your objective in this situation? Are you hoping to survive? If so then you are fooling yourself. At that speed it doesn't matter where you are at, what angle you hit, and whether the gear is up or down. The plane will pretty much destroy itself in a spectacular fashion. Personally, I'd rather hit a nice solid surface pointed straight down at a 90 degree angle. Nice and quick, no time to suffer and no chance of living with a horribly life altering injury (severe burns, paralyzing injury, loss of limbs, etc). But if you are determined to have a chance of survival I guess you just take your chances either way with land or water. Like I said, that speed is pretty much a death sentence.
But if you had the ability to slow the approach while looking for a spot to crash then a belly landing on water might be the best bet. Remember this crash?....

If you could slow the speed of the plane and found a flat area to land using the landing gear, the aircraft could theoretically land intact. The question is how fast, and the angle of the landing. You are quite unlikely to happen upon a surface adequate for landing a commercial jet. Over the Oklahoma plains, maybe. Anywhere with trees, not so much.
In the ocean, the plane is too heavy to skip cleanly across the surface of the water. Sharks aren't a big problem, its the cold water.
Either way, you're not gonna survive. Most planes can glide far enough to a shitty nearby landing strip in the event of an engine failure.
Why don't we just pass out parachutes? Could the airlines really be that cheap?

They have them, but only for small aircraft. And you have to be at a safe altitude to deploy them.
