I think its a good idea, no flaming from me. though if i had 48 extra jars and syringes for them, then i would jus make a bunch of cakes and case them to get mad shroomies. but hey if ur an experimenter, more power to u

I am an experimenter as well although not on such a grand scale as you. I am currently experimenting with sprouted grains as malt is made from sprouted barley. So far nothing is happening although other type jars are growing like crazy. I put in lots of spores into the sprouted grain too. I don't call it a waste, just learning.
Your experiments are good for our community. We all can learn from your successes and failures. You must keep posting even if they do flame you. I am seriously interrested in your results.
I am hoping for the coffee experiment. I read the post about growing on fresh coffee beans. I can't see why roasting it then sterilizing it can make that much difference to the results. I hope it works.

WTF.....hot dog buns?!
I was pondering whether or not beer would be a good mycelium growth medium the other day...and low-and-behold, I noticed some references to growing mycelium with beer on my travels. So it's interesting that you list Guinness.
Looking forward to your results.

I've been wanting to do an experiment liek this for a while, but I haven't got that many jars
One thing I'd like to try/see is PF cakes with a small amount of pure caffeine powder added (maybe dissolved in the water). I have heard coffee might be good against contams, and it might be the caffeine that does this. I'll try it later in the year if noone does first.

I think it's a great idea and I can't wait to see your results. I'm actually intersted to see how the dog food and iguana food jars turn out. We feed the stuff to our animals, so it can't be all that bad right? Good luck and keep us updated. -Bruiser

Caffeine isn't astringent as far as I know (even checked Merck for you). Also be careful as the LD50 is about 10grams....and I have no idea if shrooms can metabolize caffeine, either.
However, coffee is slightly acidic....and I would imagine the oils in coffee might be astringent....so that might help cut down on contams.
I've only ever heard of coffee as a nutrional substrate, though. Infact, you can use everything from coffee plant leaves through to espresso grounds for some types of shroomies. (Never heard of cubensis being cultivated on coffee grounds, though).

It was actually me who posted about the semen substrate. Psilo is essentially following out a similar plan to what I want to do. My substrate additives are a little different and I have quite a few more bodybuilding supplements to try out. Since this may or may not happen I will say no more for now though. Oh and I decided against the semen substrate.. just too much trouble.

In reply to:

Contams tend to favour acidic environments.

Hilarious!
I remember thinking what the hell is he doing using dog food.. now I'll have to eat my words I guess. This is cool because it keeps me enthusiastic about my own experimental substrates (exactly the same deal as you). If I were you I would start a grow log with this aswell. It does belong in advanced in terms of discussion value but it would get more constructive exposure to people in the grow log forum.
I am most enthusiastic to hear what happens when you try and grow with a creatine water substrate. The heat during sterlisation could partially damage it though (as heat is known to destroy creatine). I wonder what would happen if I used creatine as a syringe supplement. Hmm..

There is a tek here (or used to be a few years ago) regarding useing dog food with water crystals (or alone). The first few pics look somewhat wrong.. the mycelium looks like contam to me, perhaps its the lighting/camera. If you can try useing bright incandescent light or flourescent plus normal incandescent. Great experiment, thanks for keeping us posted.

Experiments like this are the only way to make advances in the field of mushroom cultivation. You are doing a great thing, and in a good, scientific manner that will produce valid results! Nice job

I'm sorry you missed out on the fruits, but the information gained is a wonderful fruit in and of itself. Thanks for giving us what you could. Your little experiment very well may spur many others to look into prepared dog foods, so you (I am guessing) just started a little revolution Good Luck in your new home.
