so i'm house-sitting for a week, and i thought this guy looked pretty "suspicious." i'm guessing its an old peyote, but i have no experience here whatsoever, so please enlighten me.

Damn, looks like Lophos indeed. Nice. Keep them protected from rain and excess sunlight.

Why dont you just ask the person they beleong to? Im shure they wouldnt mind giving you a button to grow, especially from such a big plant.

well it's for a old chemistry professor of mine. that conversation would be beyond awkward. the cactus caught my eye when he was first giving me the tour of the house.

i couldn't find anything that looked quite like that, but i was able to pull out some seed-looking things, very small, round and black. found two of them quickly, and hopefully i'll be able to find more when i have more time tonight.

yrat, I would go ahead and ask for a speciman as you have interest in growing cactus also ,whats the worst that can happen he can say no. I dont think it would be to much to ask for a speciman,I'm sure he knows that it is illegal but also that with one speciman that you are not going to trip off it either I would just persue the botanical interest approach .anyone I have come across with an issue like this although have been friends have always been willing to help another pass on the knowledge of the speciman at hand, you might work in that you know that it is illegal but you have much botanical interest as does he or he wouldnt have it but reassure him that it is with botanical and historical interest that you wish to add to your collection and if you dont have a collection and still want a speciman get a collection fast ,but i think if you truley want a lophophora williamsii for the right reasons it will happen. Also wouldnt it be a kicker if he also browsed the board.

look harder, get some tweezers and pluck them out from within the fluff
that specimen looks like it has has loads of dead flowers on it, l. williamsii is self pollinating so there should be a seed pod for every flower... if they have been on the plant a while they wont be as pink as the ones in my photo...
