Just read this wiki article carefully. here It doesn't say it causes cancer, but most importantly, it just causes cancer to kill you faster or spread faster. I understand it is just wikipedia, but I also have found numerous EntrezPubmed articles citing the same thing. Isn't that crazy!!! a fungus making cancer more deadly...damn

It's amazing how deadly things that we can't even see are. I watched a program on the telly a while back which said that the same virus that causes a sore throat can rot away your flesh while you're alive if it travels just a few milimetres and gets into your blood stream.

that's nothing! I've heard of flesh eating bacteria that kill you in hours and they can just show up mysteriously from you bumping your leg on something like a table

or maybe cancer can be cured with mushrooms.
http://www.alohamedicinals.com/Cordy_Article.pdf
"The cap-less mushroom they eventually found has been used in traditional Chinese medicine ever since, to treat kidney, lung, and heart ailments, male and female sexual dysfunction, fatigue, cancer, hiccups, and serious injury, to relieve pain, and the symptoms of tuberculosis and hemorrhoids, to restore general health and appetite, and to promote longevity. More potent than Ginseng and worth four times its weight in silver in ancient times. Due to its rarity, legend, and efficacy against a variety of health-related conditions, Cordyceps has held, and continues to hold, a highly esteemed position in the vast ranks of Chinese herbal remedies, which the West has only recently begun to incorporate into officially accepted medical practices."

Actually what he said is true...it's called "necrotizing fasciitis".
It is still very rare, but it happens. It can take a person in a matter of hours, and has a 70% death rate. Usually caused by the same bug that causes strep throat - streptococcus.

I've heard of people treating their malignant cancer with certain mushrooms.. and the drug companies won't have anything to do with the idea except to say its bs.

Id say your more likely to be able to fight cancer cells using fungal derived compounds rather than them causing cancer.

badman, there are definitely cancer causing fungi out there. Have you ever eaten a peanut that tasted bitter? If so, you were exposed to aflatoxin, a fairly carcinogenic toxin produced by a mold (an asexual fungus). Fortunately, humans are pretty resistant to the effects of aflatoxin, so the likelihood of cancer is low. But there are plenty of others. One of the biggest reasons you shouldn't eat anything that's gone moldy is that molds produce some really nasty toxins.
trendal, Tom Volk is a survivor of necrotizing fasciitis (and a heart transplant!). He's the guy who does the "Fungus of the Month web page. He's also a professional mycologist, a great lecturer, and a really nice guy.
Happy mushrooming!
