Help buying jacket..

Im looking for a lightweight, good fitting, *hightech* + durable goretex (or similar rain shell.)...
Im looking for something that i can wear in the summer as a windbreaker/rain cover and in the winter as a shell. Im also going to be touring around south america for an extended amount of time, and would like this jacket to serve double duty climbing in the ande's and hiking in the amazon...
Arcteryx seems to dominate the field, and i am considering: The arc'teryx BETA AR - http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?Beta-AR-Jacket
Which can be found for $350 on ebay.
However, im also considering going with the cheaper alternative, the Golite "phantasm" - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/appareldetail.cfm/GLT529
This jacket does not have pit zips, or many pockets.
I want the pack to be comfortable and not "stuffy" while carrying a backpack, and breathable.
Do you guys think splurging on the Arc'teryx is justified...
Any other suggestions for online dealers, or particular jacket models?

I spent $160 on a jacket thats windproof / rainproof / *proof.
I've had it for about 2 weeks.. and the fucking zip broke on it today. I'm not a happy camper.. I'm taking it back to the shop tomorrow (with no receipt) and I'm going to bitch until they give me a new one :O.
I also intend on buying some hiking boots tomorrow.. I walk absolutely everywhere and skate shoes are terrible for walking distance.
My one suggestion is don't buy a trespass jacket

Sounds like a good lesson,
Dont go cheap.
I just tried on the arcteryx, and it seems a bit over complicated, and baggy... not sure if i can justify it.

Arcteryx is quality gear, no doubt about it.
However, unless you're planning on travelling to the Wasatch mountains any time soon, most Arc gear is overkill.
Anything made by Burton, 686 or even REI/Columbia will do just fine in all but the most extreme conditions and be a good bit cheaper than almost anything made by Arcteryx.

do you have an EMS(eastern mountain sports) or REI near you?
they each make some of the best non-name-brand gear and have great staff, imo.
I'm sure you can order through either of their websites, too...

Im glad i didn't order the arc'teryx... I went to try on a couple of their upper end jackets at the outdoor stores today, and they aren't comfortable at all, Very minimalist.. not comfort features, just practical ones. I noticed the hoods were much too big (as they are made for climbing helmets.)... Arcteryx is definately overkill for my needs..
Ive been really leaning towards this guy:
http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/appareldetail.cfm/GLT529
But cannot find any reviews of it. Looks comfy though, i like the hood.

Thanks Vanguard, but ive been very unimpressed with North Face products in the current years...
Besides,
I found my jacket: [image] [/image]
Golite - Phantom (the beefed up version of the phantasm, which i posted above.) here's the details..
Features
* Imported (what is this?) * Gore-Tex® PacLite® waterproof-breathable laminate * Watertight front zipper * Taped seams * Fleece-lined chin guard * Pit Zips with watertight zippers * Dual-action adjustable hood rolls down into stand-up collar * Hem draw cords * Elasticized cuffs with adjustable Velcro® tabs * 2 Chest Napolean pockets/vents * Two hand pockets
Now i just gotta choose a color. Im leaning towards grey, over blue. (would prefere black!)
Stoked. Im REALLY glad i did my research, and went to try on those arc'teryx jackets, or i may have been gravely disappointed. I must admit to being a gear junkie, i always like to have the best even though i rarely use it to its potential.
Golite seems like a pro company and even has props from outside magazine. + its very reasonablly priced compared to alot of the jackets ive been looking at at retailers. I think Golite is more specialized, whereas companies like columbia, and north face are geared towards "active living" rather than being outdoors, ive noticed many companies lack waterproof zippers, and pit zips and other practical features, aswell as usually having bulky lining, and other unneccessary features.
What do you guys think?

fair enough - i have one from probably the early 90's!
It works great but needs to be recoated, its been washed too many times and does not keep me dry in a total downpour, hence buying the new jacket.
The new northface products seem fashion over function alot of the time, but from what i know.. they do make good tents.
