Pan. Cyanescens vs P. Cubensis
    #7847645 - 01/08/08 12:18 PM (17 years, 12 days ago)

So, I have decided to make the jump into Pan. Cyans. after the insistence of some of my friends. I have been reading around and would like you to take a look at my conclusions and see if I am wrong anywhere.

Spawn: Grain, Roadkill recommends finch seed.

Substrate: Poo and/or straw all the way. Fruiting from grain gives small shrooms. Ideally substrate depth should be around 3 inches, thicker is worse.

Casing: Very thin, 1/4 inch at max

Fruiting Conditions: Seem to be very similar to cubes. The parameters on the site indicate they need slightly warmer temps and lots of FAE.

Smaller trays are preferable to one big one.

So I was wondering, will a shotgun terrarium do the job for Pan. Cyans? Or is it time to martha it?

Any other particularities of Pan. Cs I am missing?

my friend uses a shotgun terrarium and has his girlfriend fan it while he's at work and when he comes home, he has his girlfriend get him a beer and fan it some more.

So for Pan. Cyan, a shotgun setup requires a lot more manual fanning than with cubes?

Good luck, maybe a couple of bubblers in water would help with the FAE?

Grow them exactly like cubes, except use a thinner substrate of horse or cow manure no more than 2 inches thick, and a 1/4" peat based casing layer. Other than that, don't do anything different. They're not as cold temperature tolerant as cubes, so try to keep fruiting conditions in the 75F to 85F range. They usually take a few days to a week longer to pin than cubes as well. Shotgun terrarium will work fine.

I don't like them anymore. The trip always seemed a bit on the dark side, not pleasant at all in my experience. Good luck.

I'd like to try to grow some of these. I think im going to grow some rye grass in the fruiting chamber for better CO2, O2 exchange.

Doesn't sound like a good idea. Earth contains all sorts of nasty molds.
