I and me

Ego/personality split? Superego? Interesting. Where could this come from?
I view/review my actions and thoughts, I critique myself. How strange. Is there two of me? Do I have a soul?
Were might we learn to split ourselves? Could it be from others? From the fact that we noticed that Mater and Pater observed us. They noticed us and so we began to take notice of ourselves. I could see where the idea for a soul and of a God could come from this.
Any thoughts oh wise ones?

This very dichotomy is how Eckhart Tolle became enlightened! One night in a state of extreme agitation the thought popped into his head, "I can't live with myself anymore!" When he fully realized how strange - indeed, schizophrenic - this proposition was, his reality began to unravel and he fell back into the One. So the story goes in The Power of Now, anyway.

My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Oh, some funny lyrics regarding the dichotomy:
I'm just being myself (Who?) Plus I gotta be me too Silly of me to think that I Couldn't bring myself to be you!
From 'Transformer' by Gnarls Barkley. Hilarious song.

If you notice that most of our observations of ourselves are critical then you would be able to connect this to the unhealthy effect of culture on our psyche and not on the split itself. ETs reaction might be more psychological then spiritual. Once something breaks the fixation of culture it might seem reasonable to see what is out there as supernatural although it well might not be.

Merely by reading this you have allowed me to redirect your attention and control you in some small way!
Mwahahaha! Seriously though, ultimately the split has to come from the idea that we should be a certain way because of others' points of view. I mean, why would we try and view ourselves in any other way but one, if we thought one was the only necessary way?
Confusing, I know. But its like this, why have a rear view mirror if you will never back up? Why alter yourself and judge yourself if you never intend to alter yourself based on the judgment?
I cannot see myself anymore because so much of me has become what others would have me be. Soon though, I will be closer to what I want, and further from that social creation that I once was. Not to say that features of the two will not coincide.
I am forever me.

Well it was just a thought now.
Maybe our brains with the neo-cortex just think about themselves and split naturally.
I need to use my big brain to think about this more. (not that I hope to accomplish anything)

You've been on here since noon Icelander. You should get a job. In no way is this an attempt to out troll you. I'm just stalling while the rest of me figures out what to do about your circular thinking, curse both of you!

ooh porn. That's good, for a second I thought you might be doing something bad. Now there's a topic worth philosophizing about. Human Sexuality. Yep, its the most encompassing and avoided topic between both generations and general conversation (at least really) I bet you could do more damage to someone's comfort zone with that than a lot of things. It has enough social stigma and other shit tied to it to make the most 'enlightened' cringe and turn pink in the face when confronted with it.
Hell yeah, sex is great. We ought to crack open a thread or two about why sex has so much stigma about it, and ego, and bullshit...and a lot of other crap.
Fishings good too, not many people have issues with fishing though. Not much to fishing really, unless you're doing it naked on LSD...then you've got some fishing.

Good question. I'd refer you to an entire book for a complete reply: Transpersonal Psychology in Psychoanalytic Perspective by Michael Washburn. I would direct you to Chaper 7 - 'Midlife Transvaluation and Pathologies of the Self' which begins with late dualism.
