Blue oyster in open air VS. covered and vented

Here's a pic of blue oysters fruiting for 9 days in 65-70f covered with a plastic sheet with slits and several 2" holes cut. The surrounding air is only 30% so its pretty dry in my house. Even with holes cut and venting+misting every 4 hours or so they aren't getting enough CO2 out and the air thats coming in is drying it out somewhat. Maybe cutting extra slits and not birthing the log would help.

These logs are only 5 days fruiting in 70-75f with a little over 90%rh and look how much better they are doing:

If you use open air, you'll have to mist like crazy. You can also run a humidifier or two in the room they're in. In fact, if you can raise the humidity of your whole house above 50%, it will cost far less to heat in winter, and make you more comfortable as well.
The ones that are dry also look like they're suffering from low light conditions as well. Oysters need a lot of light. RR

How much longer do the logs in the 2 bottom pics have to go? How much bigger will the fruits get?
yeah ive noticed having the humidifier in my FC room constant has raised the temp in my house 5 degrees without turning up the heat. And I dont get shocked when I walk across the carpet and touch metal

They look ready to pick. I doubt they'll get much larger, and they're probably starting to drop spores. If you haven't cooked oysters before, I'd recommend cutting the stems off and just using the tender caps. Saute in hot oil with onions and garlic. I like to make a wine-cream sauce with them. They're also good sauteed in red wine sauce and mixed into spaghetti or lasagna. RR

I harvested about 1 1/2 lb from all my logs yesterday. I sauted a handful up with some butter and onions and mixed it into some beef stroganof. It was excellent !

I dunked and reset my logs for a second flush. It was not nearly as good as the first and the logs seemed to dry out faster the 2nd time round even though I dunked overnight in a rubbermaid tub with a cup of bleach.

Now I have a new setup that I believe will work great for these oysters. I have 2 shelves put together with a small fan to blow the CO2 out the bottom. 4 fist sized holes are cut at the top center to allow fresh air in. I mist 3x a day. Each 10" x 3ft log gets 2 fluorescent lights. Also with these logs I'm only cutting slits instead of peeling entire plastic off so I can get fewer but larger oysters.

Wow looks really good man.. On some of your logs it looks like you took the plastic off or is that the way the photo just seems to look?
By the way how many jars of spawn did it take to make 1 of those big bags??

yeah, the 2 logs on the left began pinning today so i cut slits and pulled plastic back to expose 1" wide slits.
It took 7-8 quarts to make one log, but oyster grows so fast you could probably get away with 5 per log.

I decided to take the fan out because it was drying things out too fast. So I just left about a 2" gap between the plastic and the floor to let air exchange. Also, I added 2 garden trays of wet perlite under the shelves to buffer rh.

Don't forget to mist regularly too. Oysters love being wet all the time. When I'm at home and able to OCD over my mushrooms, I mist the oysters hourly. RR

lmao, i do too RR. Just staring at my mushrooms is therapeutic for my bipolar. I try to mist at least every 3-4 hours and heavily mist before I go to bed at night and in the morning.

i picked 2lbs 10oz today from the first log. Had about 2 dozen cluster and mushrooms were much meatier and larger than the previous small logs.

Cool. You must have lowered the temp. Oysters form much denser in lower temperatures. RR

this is making me hungry, can't wait till my blue oyster bags are done. Ive been throwing some table scrapes into a big pot and then i mixed in sawdust and straw...the oysters are just ripping it up
your oysters look ready to pick to me, i like how you have hardly any stems
