Oral surgeon appointment today!
    #7846724 - 01/08/08 02:17 AM (16 years, 25 days ago)

I finally get to hear the details of how my wisdom teeth will be plucked from my skull today!  I'm going to insist they put me out, that's my number one priority.  Second, I'll find out how much my insurance will cover.  I'm told I have good insurance (Delta Dental's Comprehensive plan) but we'll see...

I really hope I get some good painkillers too.  Not because they're fun, but teeth REALLY bug me out and I don't want to feel any of that. :noway:  I just need enough for the first few days of throbbing and swelling.

What else should I expect/prepare for?

you'll probably get sick, from swallowing blood. the headache is horrible, i found myself pretty irritable for the first week. ice cream and pudding are your friends. the painkillers have their moments, but the constipation was a bitch. in general, the experience really sucked for me - 2 impacted on bottom and the other 2 up top, painful shit

Mine are already grown in, but the dentist wants them out because they're really dark. They're hard to brush and I'm always biting my god damn cheek open when I chew gum so I definitely agree. I'm hoping they're easier to remove since they're already above the gums.

Goodluck.

hmm...it ranges as far as pain goes. I took meds the day or so...I felt relatively little pain in between doses. After that...it was just a slight soreness that slowly faded.

For me, the the worse parts were:
A) The Blood. You bleed like a motherfucker for the first 5 hours or so. Kinda gross.

B) Your going to have complete holes in your inner cheeks. This is probably more of a mental thing than a physical...but just seeing dark bottomless pits in my mouth really got me. And food and shit gets in there...in which you have to clean out after every meal.

but in all honesty...I think people make a bigger deal than this proceeder really is. Good luck, your going to be fine.

ya i still gots to get my wisdom teeth out.. only thing is that they haven't broken through yet..

they have hurt intensely before, but it's been a while.. i'm thinking about waiting until they bother me again to get them taken out.. it might have been a one time thing.

plus it's expensive and its surgery and stuff and i dont want to have to do that if its not necessary.

smoked a whole g of salvia tonight with me and my buddy..

felt a pretty decent buzz and had some crazy effects but the other kid with us was kinda a trip killer cuz he wasn't on the lady sally..

all i can say is.. i'd rather have some shrooms (and i wish i did )

had to talk to a cop.. apparently we cant be on private property after 11 p.m. in city limits..

at least he didn't fck with us too much..

may I suggest that the constipation was due to your diet and not the pain pills...

Before you go under do one thing:

Ask for your teeth.

I did, and I got my extracted teeth afterwards. You have no idea how enormously large your wisdom teeth are until you hold them in your hands. Post the pics here afterwards.

I had five wisdom teeth taken out...and I didn't think it was so bad!

I ate dinner about 8 hours later. Didn't need any pain killers either.

newbieshroomie,

i just got my wisdom teeth pulled 3 days ago. i got vicodin for it and if you are not taking them, it will hurt like a hell. you're not going to be able to talk for 2 days after the surgery, you should probably stock up on applesauce and baby food too.

expect to be bleeding so much on day one that when you open your mouth a little droolish waterfall of blood will come sloshing out and on to your carpet. i didn't stop bleeding until about 24 hours later.

as long as you stay pumped up on the vicodin, it won't be too terrible.

best of luck

I didn't think my wisdom tooth removal was that bad.   They hit me with a couple of shots of novocain, my mouth went numb, and then the dentist pulled them out.  I was %100 conscious for the whole thing.  It was no big deal.

Good luck dealing with Delta Dental. I had my wisdom teeth removed while I had insurance with them. I was supposed to have two surgical removals and the coverage stated that with two or more surgical removals they would cover anesthesia. I had my procedure thinking everything was good to go and low and behold a few months later I get a bill from the oral surgeon saying I owed them $350.00 for the anesthesia. The insurance company had decided the surgical removals were not necessary so I had to pay. I tried to appeal it with the state insurance commissioner but, nothing worked.
I'm sure you will do fine with your surgery. Mine didn't hurt anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be and I had all four removed at once. The oral surgeon gave me such good pain meds that I had to call and asked for something not so intense.

Yeah they're charging me $340.  A lot less than I thought it would cost though!  They prescribed me 2 valium, one the night before and one the day of (I'm taking them both the day of because I know my body and even 20mg won't do SHIT to me).  He was really cool, said he'd have me on the gas, intravenous anesthetic, and a local anesthetic.  I'm still buggin out though

Thanks for reminding me badchad, I definitely want my teeth back

getting my teeth out was horrible. don't want to scare you or anything but i was on an IV, gas, and local anesthetic and completely awake through the whole thing. not too fun. worst part as one that was rooted pretty well, he had to use his weight as leverage against the tooth and it fuckin hurt like hell even being pumped full of drugs. got vics after but didn't find that i needed them so much, saved em for another time. i think i still have like 10 or so lying around somewhere haha.

hopefully i'll never need a serious surgery and find that i'm entirely conscious with my body wide open, ugghhhh

Mine went very smoothly and I had the gas, IV & local anesthetic. They gave me a whole bottle of Mepergan but, I couldn't function so they gave me Hydrocodone. My jaw felt a little rusty a few days later but, that was the worst of it.

I made a note on my forms that I may require a higher dose of anesthetic and I explained my ingrown toenail removal disaster when I could still feel every cut and slice even with the 4-5 shots he gave me.  He assured me that there's nothing to worry about, he'd take good care of me....    And yeah my script co-pay blows asshole.  I had to pay $10 for TWO FUCKING VALIUMS!  I told the CVS drive thru, "Shit....I could find this on the STREET for cheaper. :nonono:"  Oh well.

If you have co-pay its usually a flat rate for generics. My doctor will write some of my prescriptions for 60 in a refill so I can get more for the same amount.

Yeah, seriously. I got the nitrous mask and fentanyl and\or ketamine. I was shocked after my first appointment when I saw the list of what they were going to give me.

After taking a few healthy pulls off the nitrous mask they put the needle in my arm, asked me to count backwards from 100, and then I was walking in the parking lot. Exactly like that, clear and smooth as day like I had teleported. Apparently I was going on about how easy it was and that I was fine to go for some time prior, but creeeeepy just the same.

Afterwards it was vicodins for a couple weeks, I got dry socketed pretty bad, but the vics were plenty to cope. I even got one refill. Good luck!

maybe one refill if that

my biggest mistake was that i never brushed my holes(months later), i was always thinking its gunna hurt like hell, or ill open them back up. Because of that, they didn't heal, eventually i realized something was wrong and i started brushing them.

oh and one mistake not to make, them vic's or oxycotin w/e you get, do NOT take them before bedtime. If your going to be on your back for any period of time do not take them.

They fucked my stomach up hardcore, years later im STILL having stomach problems. When you lay down they just sit in a corner of your stomach and eat away at it.

edit: and by the time you start getting stomach aches your already fucked. I took some kratom powder about a week after my script ran out because my stomach was hurting, i ended up puking a sink full stained blood

I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled out on Monday for the exact same reason, the thing was so far back in my jaw that I could never brush it and it was so decayed that it wasn't even worth it to put a filling in it.

I was nervous about the procedure but it wasn't bad at all. They gave me nitrous and everything was over with in like 15 minutes. I got a script for sixteen 7.5 mg vicodins and the pain isn't even bad, I could have gotten by with Tylenol. I won't even need any pain killers tomarrow so I'll have 12 extra vicodin left over.

I just think it'll be fun to work while on meds.  They allow that at Best Buy (if you have a prescription obviously).  I doubt they'd want me communicating with customers though so they'd probably keep me in the back fixing computers the whole time, or doing solo work, which is awesome at Geek Squad.   I'm hoping for the best!  That's the first time I've driven up to a window, handed a prescription for Valium, $10, and got a bottle with pills in it   I can't wait to pick up the painkillers, I'll have such a huge swollen smile on my face

I don't have any health or dental insurance and my script for 16 7.5 vikes was only $12. I was happy with that.

And it was supposed to be an extra $65 to get the nitrous during the procedure but the doctor didn't even charge me for that. It still cost me like $250 though.

And it was supposed to be an extra $65 to get the nitrous

Geezus! Only a doctor would have the balls to charge $65 for $5 worth of gas! No wonder our medical system is one of the most expensive in the world.

I had all four wisdom teeth taken out at the same time, one was growing sideways into the root of the molar next to it.

The oral surgeon gave me a prescription for percocet, and that got rid of all pain and gave me a terrific buzz. After a few days, I stopped taking the pills.

So, yeah, the thing about the general anesthesia is true, you're in the chair and they put the IV bag thing in your arm, then it's done, no time exists in between, complete momentary oblivion.

Yeah, no shit. For $65 I could buy enough nitrous to last hours.

Imagine me walking into the place with a whip-cream dispenser in one hand and 3 boxes of whip-its in the other and telling the doc I got the nitrous covered.

Well tomorrow morning is the extraction!  I'm nervous as shit.  The valium he gave me of course didn't do anything, it never does   (I need at least 4 to feel anything).  I'm going to see if my pops will give me a few Xanax to help.  I'm still nervous as shit!

I'm looking forward to not biting my cheek anymore when I chew gum, oh yea and the pain meds... :yesnod:

I'm having mine out Feb 9. Going under general anesthesia isn't bad. Don't worry about that. And the recovery time shouldn't be too bad. When my brother had his done, he was ready to go out that night.

I'm gonna try and get some vicodin or something and just sleeeeeeep

Well, all done!  They to keep upping the nitrous becuase it was too weak (just as I predictied).  The IV kind of put me out to the point where I don't remember the procedure too well.  I got 25 5mg Percs, and a mouthfull of blood.  How long to I wait before I can brush my teeth?  It's all over them .

Post the pics of your extracted teeth. Put a quarter next to them for reference.

They wouldn't let me keep them due to some technicality.  I'm like, come on I won't tell anyone.   He as least showed them to me.  I thought they'd be a LOT longer; looked more like 3/4 of an inch long.

I still can't feel my bottom lip, my chin, or my tongue too well.   He said this novacaine lasts a few hours   In all, it wasn't NEARLY as bad as I thought it would be.  I do remember saying OUCH!! a lot during some of it but I eventually kinda zoned out for a but.  The nurses were hot as hell too, which made it a lot easier. :naughty:

It was funny when the hot nurse opened my shirt to put the electrode thingies on she saw my Austin Powers chest and she's like, "Ohhhh this is gonna hurt like a mother when I pull this off, are you cool?" I just laughed and I was like "I'll be fine... How are my vitals lookin'?" She laughed and went, "They look great!" I love pretty nurses. They ease the tension so much.

Am I supposed to feel holes or pits right where the teeth used to be? I'm terrified of getting dry socket but I've heard that hurts like a bitch. I mean I'm sore but it's not excruciating yet... Do the holes naturally fill in like when you lose baby teeth? I thought the stitches would be sewing up the whole hole but it seems their off to the side.... I guess that's just sewing up the extra cut they made?

Help? Is it supposed to hurt when I swallow?

dam didn't you listen to anything your doc told you before the surgery:lol:

suction is bad, expecially straws for drinks!

try not to dislodge any blood clots

do not brush near them for a few weeks

and do the salt water mouth rinse EXACTLY like they tell you, i think its 2-3 times a day....just follow the instructions they gave you to the T, they had good reason when they wrote it up for each step

if they didn't give you instructions ask for a refund :P
