Xbox 360 Live question about Halo. Is this normal?
    #7846051 - 01/07/08 09:59 PM (16 years, 25 days ago)

I just got a 360 and Xbox Live. I was able to easily set it up wirelessly through my Buffalo router with DD-WRT and the wireless adapter for the Xbox. There was only a little problem with the the NAT reading MODERATE when testing the connection, but enabling the DMZ on the router it went to OPEN.

The only thing I've played so far online is Halo 3. Once I'm in a match, everything plays fine 97% if the time. The problem is getting a match setup. It frequently sits there for several minutes looking for a match, then it will say "Players found" and it should start the countdown next, but it will suddenly restart the search. It can do this several times before I actually get to play. Honestly I spend about 30-40% as much time setting up a match as I do playing and this seems excessive to me.

I can't figure out if this is normal or not. When testing the connection on the dashboard it tells me everything is great and my game play would seem to confirm this. Lag is typically not a problem. Even when playing in big teams I hear people calling out the score and they are behind what I seeing.

this might sound dumb, but try playing a different game. i play rainbow six vegas almost every night. go into marketplace, download things and see if you get a fast download. go into marketplace and see how long it takes for pages to load. if you try this and everything runs slow, its more than likely a problem on your end.

It is normal. I have the same problem with Halo, it's searching for people who have the same sort of match inquiries as you do - a lot of the time it can take a while because while the game is finding players, many ppl back out, thus restarting the whole search process until a select amount of players have been found. Xbox live can be a bitch sometimes; try finding a match on Guitar Hero 3, hah! Youll be up for days until you can manage to connect with anyone...

Try disabling DMZ, setting up a static IP for your Xbox 360, and simply forwarding the ports you need to the IP address that you assigned. The ports you need to forward are: UDP 88, UDP 3074, TCP 3074. This website may help you: http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Yet another Microsoft product showing their ineptness.

In fairness, it is generally regarded as the best online gaming experience. I actually tried playing some online game back with my Playstation 2 and it was horrible. At least the Xbox Live has the gameplay part down.
